. Last week my 6-year-old lab Eisenhower "Ike" Winfield ate 20-40 pieces of sugar free gum.

Within 30 minutes he was having massive tremors, seizures and loss of his motor functions. We took him to the vet and immediately and they diagnosed him as eating Xylitol which is a sugar substitute highly toxic to dogs. Like 3 pieces of gum containing Xylitol is enough to kill a 100 lbs dog.

They stabilized him by dumping alcohol on his body and putting ice packs in his arms pits to bring his 107-degree temp down, he was cooking. They also gave him an IV solution with glucose to counter the Xylitol . He was basically going into a diabetic coma.

They told us if we wanted any chance of Ike living that we needed to take him to KSU Veterinary Medicine.

Ike spent the next 24 hours in ICU touch and go. Once they were able to get his sugar level back in check he started to get better. They also administered some type of drug to protect is liver from damage as that is what they were most worried about.

Anyway, 3 days and $3500 later Ike is at home with us. He seems to be the same dog before but no idea what type of long-term effects there will be. We will continue to treat his liver and have his blood work checked for the next month.

Just want everyone to be aware of Xylitol. I read it can also be found any other foods like peanut butter so make sure you check the label! It's so toxic there should be a warning label. No more sugar free gum in our house ever!

Sorry you and Ike had to go through that but I’m glad he’s okay.

I had no idea that Xylitol was toxic to dogs. Thanks for letting us know.

That like was for him making it and your warning. Being keto I became all too familiar with it I gave strict orders that it is not to be brought into our house. Any time I use "safe " sweet substitutes I give a warning that A. J. Does not get any of it. I don't trust any of them as far as the dog is concerned. It takes grams to kill a dog

I hope he has a speedy recovery. I just got news from my vet today that my 11 year old lab (faithful duck dog) has cancer. Going under the knife in two weeks.

Ugh that’s awful, sorry you had to go through that! Why the heck do they use these damn chemicals that are poison! Glad your pup made it though and I hope there are no long term issues.

Hope he gets to feeling better soon! I freaked out yesterday when I got home from work in the morning because apparently my dumb cats knocked a thing of gum off the table and it was open lying on the floor. Thankfully for once, a Lab didn't just eat whatever is there for the eating although I kept an eye on Maggie all day.
