Probably one of the main things to remember when hunting is have fun. If the way you are hunting becomes like work and you are dreading going out, then try a different way. Find out what works best for you and your area. Never be afraid to ask questions or bounce ideas off us. I guess one tradition I have is before heading out hunting I ask my daughter how many point buck I should shoot. I began this when she was little and she just left for college so I will have to text her the question. Never let anyone else tell you what you should shoot(unless you are hunting their land). Can't wait to hear of your hunts especially since I have never hunted blacktail or mule deer. Can you hunt either specie where you are at?
That’s a deal I can and would make. I’ll most likely get a tattoo to commemorate this season regardless of the outcome. I did for turkey last year. I can if I wanted to take the trip or if I knew people in those areas. It’s a 5-10hr drive. Only Mulies and Burro deer in my zones.
I'll ditto what wibowhntr said. I remember my mother telling my dad, who would take us quail hunting: don't come home unless you have all 3 boys with you. So my dad (a US Marine) drilled safety into our psych - e.g. where is your gun pointed, treat it as if it were always loaded, etc, etc. Safety was always the number one priority. (That attitude carried on as I am a retired MD Hunter Safety Instructor and Bowhunter Instructor). The other thing is that my dad made sure we were out there to have fun, and we did! My dad gave me my first bow (Red Wing recurve) in 1964 and I fell in love with it. And I am still at it with a crossbow as old age has limited my bow options. Enjoy the chase so that bringing home game is just a bonus to time spent in the field/woods. -fsh
Ran out to camp yesterday to check on plots and do a couple things to get ready for the season. Plots look good for planting Aug 12th.
Turns out the answer is; look into the weather better and not just the maps. I didn’t know that this storm was a hurricane passing by. Wind and rain kept them bedded down. Wind got up to 55 last night. I gave it the full day. I got some good scouting in, cameras set up. I may have a chance to go back up Sunday morning.
I am packing for a moose hunt. I have to get out swap some batteries on cams at home before I go. Getting some good pictures in KY and IL, not so much in NY, only one maybe shooter so far be on my cams regularly at home. I have two buck that last year I thought they were three year olds and hopefully it they made it they would put on some inches…alas they didn’t improve much at all.
Good luck on your Moose hunt Jim. Wish you good weather and good times and maybe a big ol’ bull or 2. Send us some pics.
Good luck on the moose hunt! What part of New York are you from? We have a young man living with us from Brantingham. Thinking about taking a trip out there with him to go hunting whitetails.
I live just a little ways south of Albany, on the Albany/Greene county line. Brantingham is near tug hill or the western edge of the Daks, it’s a whole mother world out that way.
I need some tree stand therapy. Work has been nothing but rough for the passed few weeks and there is vacation in the bank to burn. My kids are old enough (6 and 11) that my wife is letting me spend more time at the cabin. If I had my way I would save my vacation and take off mid September through the end of the year and live at the cabin. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I know I am. Temps are looking a little better than they were a few days ago. Stands are up and ready. Bow is dialed in and ready. Cannot come at a better time.
Pretty much...plan is to head out midmorning to look for a white oak that is dropping and look for any fresh buck sign.
