this is a trope. Do I hate the IRS, yes. Do I think it should exist at all? No. But it does. And for those of you complaining that it has been several months and you are still waiting for your refund, you should probably be happy they are hiring a lot of new employees, most of which will be responsible for supporting and processing said returns. The vast majority of that 87k number that is being sent out will not be gun-toting agents. People conflate all IRS employees with IRS agents, and further conflate IRS 'agents' with IRS Special Agents. IRS agents conduct audits, etc. They do not carry a gun, and do not have arrest powers. IRS Special Agents are law enforcement - they investigate many kinds of fraud, and also money laundering (including narcotics money laundering.) They do have arrest power. People with arrest powers, tasked with investigating money laundering especially related to narcotics trafficking, should be fit and carry a gun. They should not carry said gun unless they are trained and willing to use it in a deadly force situation. Something like 70% of all federal Special Agents are retirement - eligible within the next 5-10 years. It routinely takes 2-5 years to recruit, vet, hire, train, and field new federal Special Agents. To have an effective workforce, they have to have a balanced workforce of the soon-to-retire, mid-career, and new blood. All that said- abolish the IRS.
