The seeds I planted early are up and growing the spinach "guard leaves " turned yellow with the hard freezes but main plant do I g good. I have my seed potatoes cut and drying getting ready to put in towers tomorrow. The tree guys have been here all day t as king err own the dead beech around the house and the dead and damaged maple near buildings and power lines. This will put as dent in the budget.. also lots of work for me. All limbs and trunks are stacked in hedge row.
My oldest and I built a new 6’ x 6’ raised bed for the vegetable garden this evening. Still have to pick up some plants for it. We have seeds for a few tomato varieties, onions, watermelon, lettuce. We need to get some more peppers, possibly green beans and carrots as well.
Watering is getting crazy it's so dry. I love the tractor ride plantings from last year. . I am repurposing a few things now and looking for more tractor tires. These line the garden fencing where I have dumped most garden rocks. I filled and aluminium industrial vent cover husband drilled drain holes in and old dryer tub. They got a layer of garden rock/ soil in bottom, middle was a lime mixed year old wood chip compositing. Topped with a good planting soil /compost mix. Planted rhubarb in the deep tub and mire strawberries in the other.
So it never rained last night and it's suppose to be raining now....hubby is mowing.... I weeded and limed then retilled the 4 yr. Clover garden plot. I then started pounding posts and rearranging fencing so I can plant tomatoes and peppers there. I rotate these every year. A lot of work but it actually helps with the blight issues. I got 17 tomatoes in and weed barrier down. Then prepared the trench for the sweet peppers. Raked up the heavy clumps from killed off clovers and grasses to lay down a other section of barrier. Let that rot under the hot black material. I'll then add more fencing to finish the next row of tomatoes. My onions are starting to peek. I ate my first radish today from that April planting. I also cut flowers from chives. Late lunch and Sun's coming back out so got go plant peppers. Hubby mowed the soon to be bean plot... I just need to do a kill down in a few days and till it up in a few weeks
18 sweet peppers in and 17 tomato..all set to plant next row of tomato then the last 10 sweet peppers. Pole beans tomorrow weather permitting. Neighbors have been in sanctuary most of day and think they are having a party in their Amish building up there. Makes me think any turkey may migrate down to us tonight. I think I'll hunt the gypsy blind in the morning. Still have that one more bird to get..
I grow all my own , that said I'm terrified to go over to the garden. The storm finally arrived. Thu Der . And light rain suddenly the'm ed to a deluge then 1/4 " hail with a flooding salute. Well I was in basement doing l a nifty when it hit. I had my hot peppers out to get watersheds...by the time I got to th we m all 24 had been tore to he'plans flattened. ...OMG I can't think about what I'll find in the garden...saving grace I buried everything deep so only tops were exposed... I'm sure my lettuce are gone. Temps have dropped way lower than predicted as well.
Peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, and watermelon planted tonight. We have a blue berry bush as well still in a pot. I will probably be putting it in the ground later this summer when it is bigger.
The tomatoes and peppers did well..lettuce got beaten up but will survive.A good rain can help a lot . Onions are coming. The strawberry look great. Every thing else is doing OK thus far. We had radishes from garden last night.
Planted some sweet potatoes, pumpkins, and what may be the last strawberry bush in the city. We ran out of room in the raised beds I built, so we stuck these ones in old flower beds that were not planted with flowers this year.
So this is my traditional planting week end. This year I went early so only hot peppers and more seeds went in yesterday. The spinach is doing well as is the Swiss chard,beets,kale. All the onions are up.and will pull a few as punching onions to this the sweet s to grow big. My Garlic is the best I've ever done, should be getting scales off them soon. Well I'm disgusted about sweet peppers and tomatoes...all bout 9 sweets werewolves out and have lost 5 tomatoes. I have done everything possible ans still can't get the slugs, snails,cut worms and red worms. I have beer in trays and borax with sugar out. I have discredited ground and fabric with Seven. BTW....gypsy caterpillars are in full force again this year. Peas, beans, cabbage , broccoli all good and I have romaine, red lettuce growing with radishes and planted okra last week. I said to heck with it and decide to attempt replacing the eaten peppers and a few tomato with seed just to see how it does. An experiment that has worked with some tomatoes in the past . Never tried it with peppers though. Oh and the potatoes are peeking out the towers, my new asparagus is sprouting . We will have lots of strawberries. Winter squashes go in this week and pumpkins get planted later. Summer squash aren't up yet but in ground. Hope all your gardens are doing great
As an experiment I planted some watermelon. So we'll see how that does. Dug up an old raspberry bush to make room for it. Cucumbers starting to emerge. Tomatoes, peppers, beans all doing good. Will start zinnias for the wife. Rose bush we planted last year came back good as well as the purple aster.
Coming along nicely, first peppers and tomatoes are starting to show. The cucumbers have lots of flowers. We have been getting the odd blueberry but not a huge amount ready at one time yet.
Starting to get some beans emerging. Hopefully in a week or 2 I'll get my first harvest. Cucumbers are starting to flower only a matter of time before they start producing. Getting some tomatoes but not as many as I had hoped. Still early in the year. First year growing peppers and got 3 Jimmy Nardello sweet peppers growing that I can't wait to try
Radishes ,lettuce ,strawberries, blueberries have all been great. Got some spinach, broccoli and onions. Lots of garlic scapes. Tomatoes are all in flowers, cukes are about 8 " tall, peas all in flower all summer and winter squash are looking great. Peppers are flowering and we have one banana pepper nearly ripe. Pole beans are climbing and planted more today with Bush beans . Pumpkin get planted tomorrow . Eggplants , cabbage and cauliflower , okra are all up and growing well. Carrots are slow beets got stunted Swiss chard was eaten. I'll be planting a,second round of greens and beets in July.
Today I pulled blk.paper and tilled last year's winter squash area. I set it up for a corn planting.. prepped two other areas for more greens. Too hot for spinach but Ocha is just as good and heat tolerant. I have a few plants growing now,may plant more late cukes.
