Only two months behind but... finally got hubby to put disc on...oh boy ....nuff said I cleaned out and regreased all the bearings. Then did first discing on upper field. I started the lower field when I went down with forks to lift the new blind from late last year. I built it on a huge stone pile from the field and it sunk more than I expected. Now it's pretty level again, it's back legs are up on concrete filled blocks. . This is an open blind that I still may plant corn around. The farmer just planted his corn last week and I've seen them plant as late as Mid July so I still may plant. I also managed to instal a new 16ft 2x6 ridge pole in the green house. That was interesting. Even got some mowing done...I'm tired.....
Well let me bore you with a few pics. First stage of discing done before rains.I have selven granules to spread and a few bags of lime. I put a bit of lime down each year. . Not today though it's gotten HOT! The deer Flys are swarming bad after the last week of cold weather. Plus I'm old and tractor work in the hot sun is hard work! Lol Tried to get a pic of my persimmon flowers that was oddly tough and the mulberries as usual are loaded. That blind is only 10 yards from the edge of the road and so easy to slip into. I do need some sort of cover though. The sun shines right in my face. Making it difficult to see. I was thinking a green pop up canopy I could nail to up rights in corners? Hhhmmm.
I just came in from planting the lower field. I spread 70#s of corn and a few pounds of wild life sorghum overr that. Disced it all in and then dragged it teeth up with the harrow drag. . This after greasing the disc again. Now as you know I plant feed corn. It has worked better than great up to a few years ago when not one seed came up and I could not e Ben find any of the seed. I plan s noted a hay mix after that. Well I have red tree ed the seed and it terminates, played down grub and worn granular poison. And it is suppose to rain tomorrow. The wild life sorghum was to hedge my bet on this. Son e thing has to come up. I just may have to do a thinning . But between the wood chucks rabbits Turkey, deer ,robins, crows, crackles and mobs of squirrel I doubt that would be needed. If it comes in thin,well there is always my late July rape seed. Wish me luck I'm just looking for some sort of draw when the corn silage is cut and 100's of acres in cover disappear. The clover plots around this are looking good albeit short. No rain for a long time. Gosh I'm tired! I found more soybean seed on top of what I had bought. The soybean / Cowper field will be planted next week. P S....FJB! My Glysophate that cost me 23. Last year....50.00 WTH!
Went out to disc up our final plot today. It’ll be around 3 acres of big and beasty. Our bean plot is looking really good. We had grass that didn’t die with the first round of spray so we sprayed it again last week. Most of the grass is dying now. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Finally got the beans planted soybeans then went over those with the cowpeas. I still have beans left over so I will be doing a spray down and discing somewhere for late cow peas for their attraction. Will do that when I plant the rape seed the last week in July.. The bean plot was a total PITA. Never will I plannt a hay mix again what was I thinking. . I thought it was good enough to weight the harrow drag and drag them no...so flipped drag and attached it to the disc and did a light discing in, letting the drag unweighted to flow over it...hhmm still have beans on top. So with no rain for a few days I'll be filling the tow behind spray tank with water in it. Just enough to get them started before the critters find the seed..The seven granular worked, lots of dead shiny blk.centapedes. Let's hope it took out the other crawlers as well. Tomorrow will be a day of washing and scrubbing equipment.
Went back up to the property to spray some more areas for fall plots. The plots I sprayed a couple weeks ago , it worked well. Hopefully my plan will work this year.
Today I had a rough clean up to do..curly dock....a 1/4 acre,of it. Now this had to be done by hand because t had developed seed heads. Mowing was not an option so I had to go through an snip then off at the base a m.p.h. d lay them on the brush file concertos way if the seeds,are viable after they dry they won't grow. Yes I Did this before and the seed first came up through the pile. The plants will be sprayed next spring abd summer. Tough stuff to kill with roots literally feet long.
Not a complaint though tropical plot PITA with great stuff mixed in. So the great things...I checked the corn/sorghum plot....discing in after seeding them dragging over worked because this year the corn is starting to germinate. Sorghum is as well. The lane way plot may be very thin because they have been digging seed big time. The sorghum seed is still there though. The corn must have been pretty deep because zero rain going on 3 weeks storms are circling around us. I'm very surprised to see the germination. To that I wasn't expecting that and now I have orchard grass that was "dead" for three weeks now growing. I can't spray without killing new growth in plot plants. So let's hope the plants grow faster than the grass. Now let's hope I see the same with the bean plot.
That gentle rain and moderate temps have the beans and the corn /sorghum sprouting well,that said.. . Deer prints have exploded and a mob of squirrell redesigning the l a new way up.big time. A.J.stopped that quickly! Birds are pulling corn seedlings I discard in a loyal here's to a fast growth to get past some of this..
Well I may have to rethink the corn sorghum. Corn germinated great. But squirrels and Robins again devistated it division and plants pulled. The beans are great. Knock on wood ,but need help on weed control will make a plea post. .
Thank the Lord hubby fixed the Gator. For one thing it would have been gone way too long. Our go to JD guy retired so it would have cost a fortune just to get it there. No we do not have a big enough trailer weight wise. Then Labour and parts cost. Well he did a bunch of YouTube research then dug in. It was just a compressed air issue plus he found a huge mouse nest in a spot my last hosing off and cleaning didn't catch. He said I would never have seen it it was in deep and under things. Man I need it I have . Wood to haul and I weeded the garden this morning bone dry 3 " down and things are growing slow. 2 55gals get played out this afternoon with fertilizer
So the corn, there will be a partial replant into beans. Not due to germination but animals and NO WATER. Yep the stuff that made it to 4 " is yellow and dying. Even the beans are looking mighty sad with no rain and high heat until Tuesday or Wednesday. There will be a quick spray tomorrow, wanted it today but watering the garden took several hours and 455 gallon barrels hauled in by 5gal buckets one barrel at a time. Not an easy job guys.. anyways will prep tank tonight for early morning work. That is if I do not get a call to drive down to Big Flats . Family stuff. It still may affordable the cover to reach my blind. Cover is about all I was looking for. That and the familiarity of corn being a draw when silage is cut
Same, no rain. I have two fields sprayed and tilled ready to go. Waiting on rain to seed and drag. 10 day forecast doesn't look good! If I was ambitious, I would plant my plots below the pond and use a pump to water them.... Sighs....
One of my pumpkin plots failed to grow.? Bad seeds? Brassica plots fertilized, cultivated and ready to plant July 25. Clover is doing incredible.
I planted. Two different sections of sweet corn in the garden a week apart. The treated seed...not one kernal came up. The untreated is up and will be watered today. Go figure, both Seedway. Garden pumpkins are up jackolanterns. The ornamental I planted July 5th not yet up. I plant all pumpkin late the first week in July. This way they are ripe just at Holloween. Rape seed will go in in a couple of weeks. Hopefully late beans in about the same time.
Checked the beans and corn again this morning Corn all but dead, beans yellowing. Got back for lunch and it's raining finally a nice steady rain...please God last a few hours and THANK YOU!!!!
Picked 5# of wild red and blk. Raspberry today. Took some pics,what a little rain can do. Some bare areas but some good growth literally over night. Then a tall 15 year old high hinge cut I in a made bedding area under oaks. Professionals say these are not good. Mine have worked. I go in every year and pull down new grow fir browse and side cover they love it in there. I set up many small areas like this around the property. Look close you can get a scale with A. J. Being under one.
Went back up to the property, touched up some sprayed areas and re sprayed another area for the fall plots. Also rolled over the winter wheat to knock it down. Will hopefully plant everything win a couple of weeks, rain dependent of course. Clover is still doing well in the as of right now. This little guy hitched a ride with me too.
