Yesterday I posted some pictures of a bear I saw while driving home from working at my bar. I got to thinking about what that bear may have been doing near that power pole. I've noticed that some of the poles in the area are wrapped with barbed wire to about 7 feet high. A couple of Linemen told me it was to keep the bear from shredding the pole or climbing it. So on the way there this morning I thought I'd stop and take a look. Pictures in next post.
As you can see the bear was scratching the hell out of the pole. The high mark on the back side of the pole is over 7 feet high. Here is the culprit. Here is a pole wrapped in barbed wire. They also wrap the poles with a thick plastic sleeve to keep critters out of the transformers.
Bears like "certain" telephone poles. I know and watch quite a few that get bit/rubbed every year.i have sole access to a 3 mile stretch of riverbottom. There is a grassy road on the bank.it has poles along 2 miles of it. There are several that get repeated use and have for years. The others are not used. My (guess) is the creosote in them. Attraction? In good bear areas, by Oct, you should be able to see an actual trail going to that pole.
He's not in farm country. But he is on a large tract of state land. 1500 plus acres. Mostly piney forests with a mixture of hardwoods with a couple of large cranberry operations near by. Sent from my SM-G981U using Tapatalk
This one showed up in the back yard last night, knocked down the bird feeder….. he didn’t like me after that.
