WV has only been red since 2000. Historically democrat state due to coal mining union strength. It was one of the last states to reflect the defection of pro-life Democrats to the Republican party. The state prior to 2000 could best be described as Reagan Democrats: strong military, pro-life, but reliant on social spending. You could do a conservative poll and the average WV would've looked conservative. But then in the voting box.... WV Republicans also never made a serious attempt to unseat Bobby Byrd. He sat on the finance committee and filled northcentral WV with federal jobs.
