Awesome but miserable 3 hours in a tree. What made it miserable was the visibility. Even though in super thick cover, the wind was crazy insane. I could not even look towards the one main trail. Snow pelting me in the eyes. No way I could have shot a deer there. Ended up seeing quite a few including the Shor tined 5x5 but everything was outta range (40 yards) . I seldom sit in this stand as it's tough to get to but when it's a strong north wind (today), it can be killer! 20* now and 40ish winds. Wood stove n cold beer feel mighty good.
Yes. I have yet to lay eyes on one but we see tracks here and there and have heard them howling a few times over the last several years.
We ended up seeing 4 elk. They weren’t up and feeding in the open today so we went into some thick bedding timber. I bumped a couple that I never saw more then a glimpse. BIL had one at 20 yards facing him but she buggered out as he tried to raise up on her. Said he needed about 3 or 4 more seconds but she didn’t cooperate. There was a second one with her. He heard others crash off too but only saw two of them. Very thick stuff and rough to get a shot, but did prove to be a way to lay eyes on some finally. All that’s left for hunting now is late archery deer, will try to get out for that next weekend, it opened today and runs until the 20th, in a unit about 2.5 hours away.

I’m back. Some red and gray squirrels was it. It’s 50 and windy with some rain. Not ideal. Cold front coming through tonight tomorrow’s hi low 30s. Might try again.

Yes, we can hunt them. Seasons are pretty long on public and they are open all year on private property. I keep saying I'm going to actually go out and target them but haven't got around to it. I seem to not have the ambition to hunt something that I don't get to eat for the most part, although calling in coyotes is a lot of fun and I do that on occasion...used to do that quite a bit. I do have a wolf tag in my pocket every year and would absolutely take one incidentally while hunting something else. I buy what Idaho calls a "Sportsman's Package" every year. It is a hunting/fishing combo, archery stamp (required for archery only hunts), muzzleloader stamp (required for muzzleloader only hunts); turkey, deer, elk, bear, cougar, and wolf tags, and steelhead and salmon permits. I pursue pretty much everything included except for cougar and wolf, but like having a cougar and wolf tag in my pocket just in case I happen to encounter one while hunting something else. One of these days I'll give it a try, I know I'd enjoy it as I very much like hunting something that will respond to calling.
One of my best encounters was on a windy day in Kansas. Anyone who has hunted Kansas knows how the wind can get out there. Both of the people with me never left the hotel room that evening. I grabbed a stool and hunted from the ground in a series of what we call evergreen trees. Across the horizon about 200 yards away I saw a tank of a buck walking across a cut milo field. I grabbed my antlers and started rattling. He kept walking as thought he didn’t hear it. I grabbed the antlers and my bow and weaved my way in and out of the trees to close the distance. I rattled again. This time he just turned and made a straight line for me. I am on the other side of the tree, he gets to about 5 feet from me on the other side of the tree. I draw and he senses something. Before he gets in my lane he bolts about 30 yards and stops. I try and aim but he takes off and I never got a shot. Truly a memorable encounter that did not end in a dead deer, but it got my blood flowing, and I was able to tell my buddies about it when I got back to the hotel room, where they had zero encounters.
