Hunting this afternoon seems to be out. Wind is at steady 23 mph. I might be crazy enough to go out but i bet the deer have more sense that me and will lay low till this passes.
Picman, I have great times hunting in high winds. Get in thick stuff, stay away from field edges. I'll take a 30mph sit over dead calm anytime (unless super cold out)
Many large studies show deer love to move in high wind during the day. Besides the temps, high winds show the biggest increase in deer movement as they increase.
Some cool stuff from Penn States deer study. https://www.deer.psu.edu/where-did-he-go-and-where-did-he-come-from/ https://www.deer.psu.edu/disappearing-act/
Seen it myself. Last time in NJ high winds moved in and I thought we were going in for nothing, but deer were running around all over the place.
Well it's been action packed so far! Got here late. I took a extra mile walk to get this spot by following a large creek. When I get to the cut I want to go up to get into the bedding, I jump a buck bedded right on the point. I pushed in 50 yards and setup. 10 minutes after setting up had deer running thru the thicket coming towards me, then stopped. With in 50 yards. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
Sitting on the edge of a picked corn field. Not expecting much tonight but this sure beats my recliner.
Sitting in my box blind. I built this last winter. I prefer sitting in the open, but it is convenient some days. Today is rainy and windy in SW Michigan. Congratulations Vermontonian on the doe. Lester - glad you are healing and hunting. I disliked someone's post, more of a disagree. I may not ever stop messing with Mike. Just messing with him. Has proven himself to be a stand up guy.
4 does went by. As they approached the woods I could see more movement. More does in the woods with a little buck pestering.
Ok. So I did go out and saw exactly what I expected. Nothing. Got 8 inches of snow since morning and it's still coming down. I have seen plenty of deer in high winds. Very few deer with an east wind of any speed. Log book says 10 deer in 23 years.
