All setup atop cardiac ridge. Clear sky, wet forest floor, 34 degrees and a super thick fog. I can hear twigs snapping on the ridge below me. 15 minutes till legal shooting light. Blood will be spilled today!! Good luck y’all!
Ok, I told you guys yesterday that I would fill in the details on the buck I killed. I obviously was very busy after the kill and then I decided to go ahead and drive home last night. I had been in Ohio since the 6th and quite honestly was seeing very few deer. This was a bit disappointing since the years I've been hunting this place, I always see plenty of deer. On Nov. 11th we saw a few small bucks out during daylight. As a matter of fact, we had gone back to the stands right after lunch and we were actually on stand by about 1230. I even got a pic from one of my cameras that was close to my stand, of a small 8pt at 1400, although I never saw that deer. My brother-in-law, who was with me, were talking about it and we decided that the next day, the 12th, we would try to do an all day sit. I packed some edibles for the day and I got in stand about half and hour before daylight. I saw a scrubby 7pt almost immediately after legal light that gave me a 20yd shot, but I was determined I was going to hold out for something larger. I didn't see anything else for the rest of the morning. About 1100 I climbed down to eat the food I had brought with me and to give myself a break from the stand. I climbed back up at 1130, and honestly was having a hard time staying awake. About noon or so I was really beginning to question my decision of staying in all day, but the thought of seeing those smaller buck cruising the day before, kept me in there. At 1230 I noticed I just wasn't even focusing on hunting and thats when I GOT MY PHONE OUT! That almost cost me a chance at this buck. I became engrossed in what I was doing and was pretty much oblivious to everything else. At 1250, I don't know if I heard a noise or caught some movement, but I looked up just in time to see this buck coming right to me at only 30yds. I was sitting and my crossbow was hanging so it didn't leave much time. Fortunately his head went behind a tree and I stood up and took my bow off the hook all in one motion. He must have caught some movement and stopped just for a moment and looked at me. It didn't seem to slow him much as he continued on his path. I decided to let him get a little past me before I pulled the trigger. When I did, he mule kicked and blood began gushing out from the wound. He went about 25yds and I watched him stop and stagger and then he went down. He didn't get back up. After I got down I went to the spot and lazered back to the the tree and it was a little more than 18yds. It all happened so fast it almost seemed surreal. My regret is that I was messing around and was not focused. I feel I missed out on part of the hunt by not seeing him sooner and knowing what he was going to do. But after all is said and done, I got him! Here's a few more pics. Please ignore my completely goofy looking hat and neck gaiter. They're goofy looking but very warm. I might also mention, he was back in more than a mile and all I had to get him out was one of those heavy duty garden wagons. But thanks to my brother-in-law, these two over 60 guys, got-r-done! 34* and sprinkling. LFG! Really want to take the gun today for the sole fact that there are more shot opportunities, but I’m sticking to the bow. I’m not going to get a big bow buck gun hunting.
Congratulations again Jim, thanks for sharing your story. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Hunting neighbor is rattling up a storm. First time in days not a single deer in field to run through our place to his. No leaf cover..glassing and not even turkey. Pretty quiet compared to yesterday's winds.
Windy and cold. I'm hunting our family farm about 30 minutes from home. Not the best place for a big buck, but it's one of my favorite places on earth. Good luck morning peeps.
Been hard finding shooter Bucks. Had a camera on the edge of the cut corn. 20yds into a finger of woods. The 10th Funky Buck went through at 0655. The 11th 8pt went through at 0656. Nothing the 12th but it was raining. Decided to do a ground hunt 25yds away from the trail they used to leave the field. Had 4 Doe come through at about 0630, so far no Bucks. . Almost time to move to late morning stand.
