I know that I need a new bow, but the moose are rutting and I don't want to try getting into a new setup right now.

I did dry fire this bow. (It wasn't complete idiocracy, I was stalking a moose when I noticed my thumb release wasn't functioning... I thought I magically fixed it so in my adrenaline rush I drew back to test it, but now I know the release was missing a set screw and converted to back tension mode so... it dry fired.)

My archery tech restrung it and deemed it "safe enough for the season," noting a tiny crack in a less critical part of the cam. BUT NOW - I got all geared up this morning and noticed this.

The photo is a splinter on my lower limb. It's super tiny but it's more than just paint, there are definitely fiberglass threads on it. I don't know if it is from the dry fire last week or from scraping through the brush this week.

Would you shoot this bow once?

I would not shoot it. It can get pretty gnarly when those things let loose. If you do decide to though, please shoot it at the house a few dozen times to test it and please have a friend video so we can all have closure

My concern is that I would make the damage worse shooting a few dozen times... no?

I had something like that happen and they said don’t shoot and had to get limbs replaced which bowtech did for free.

Absolutely. But if you are going to shoot it is better to try it at home where you can have emergency services as opposed to few miles out in the bush.

Ahh, I'm setting up a different bow instead. I am not excited about it, but I don't want to injure myself or an animal.

Agree with Fix, very smart move. I wouldn't shoot a bow with that kind of limb damage even once, not worth it.
Sorry about your misfortune, that really sucks. Glad you have a good bow available to try to salvage your moose season.
Good luck, I think moose is the best of all wild game meat.
As the Canadians say, cheers! Or perhaps I should say, "mmwah!" (my best impersonation of a bull moose)

Agreed with the others. I have a scar on my wrist from when a string snapped at the peep. It was cutting and I had no idea. I touched off the release and everything popped... scary as hell!

Oh gee it’s only a slightly cracked cam and limb. WTH could possibly go wrong?
