not great at putting thoughts into words but bear with me here. I'm Giddy. Am at my cabin now and a couple hours ago, I was in the woods doing foodplot stuff. Seen a car coming towards me on a goat trail. "Who the eff is this"? Got purty bristled up as I went to confront this trespasser. Drove my 4wheeler up to the car ready for "words". Here is this old white hairedfella. 83years old A man i have lost contact with about 30 years ago. He was the guy that took a snot_nosed 12 year old bowhunting for the first time. That was over 40 years ago! He heard I had this piece of ground and decided to swing in. We sat on the deck,drank a few beers n reminised.. Growing up,he was a "GIANT " to me as a bowhunter. He hunted with a blackwidow recurve and has killed over 200 deer with it. To make this encounter even better was another vehicle pulls up and its a local fella. Hes 78. These 2 fellas have spent more time together bowhunting over the past 60 years its crazy. They were both my HEROES as a young kid. I have not heard my "nickname" (Gutt) in 35 years but heard it several times tonight. Before they left, I asked the older guy if he still had his blackwidow. Yep. He has not bowhunted since he turned 75 due to a bad shoulder. I damn near begged( no, I did begg) him to let me use his bow this fall to shoot a deer. He's only got 4 wood shaft arrows left but I think he's going to do it Imagine doing your thing and having willy Nelson n mearle haggard show up. That's how I feel right now

Great read, can only imagine the range of feelings that went through your body as you walked up to unknown, ready to fight, then realize who it was. Good thing you didnt just start throwing lead..look forward to your hunt with the recurve.

Thanks all. Been off n on all day reflecting on how important they were in my desire 2 bowhunt as a young kid. That first time I went, I remember him parking the truck in the a.m. dark,and all he said was "head that way and find a stump to sit on" I was scared ****LESS! Was mighty happy when the sun broke To make this even sweeter is...,this old fella was hunting with my (long dead) great uncle when he shot at the time, the pope n young WORLD record buck back in about 1953? He was fairly young himself and actually made the "drive"along the river where my G/U shot it. I ended up ****ting my pants in the dark about 100 yards where G/U shot his buck 23 years later. Check out Gordon Whittingtons book world record whitetails "The Maytag Man" my G/U. Anywhoo, I would feel SO privileged to shoot a deer (even a fawn) that is owed by the guy that lit my FIRE and without a doubt shaped my life 40+ years ago. Thanks again for reading this. Ain't that the truth Sota. This story brought back some memories of my mentor as well. Unfortunatley he isn't with us anymore BNB - Glad you were able to spend this time with them.
Oh Man..., I've been dreaming of taking a deer any deer) with his bow Would it not be SUPER cool to shoot a deer with my mentors bow and the SAME arrow that killed a world record buck with? My G/U gave me that arrow with the broadhead still attached when I was about 16 years old. Still had blood on it. Anyway, I shot a jackrabbit with it and it ran off with it. I did not realize at that age how special it was. Man, how awesome it would be if it would all come together full circle Thanks again all
hopefully that didn't come across negative. I meant that I liked it as a euphemism for when a fellow hunter dies and will use it when the occasion calls for it.
