Hello, hunting my first year with my compound bow, have a 30" draw, was wondering if 60 lbs is enough to kill deer, turkeys, and possibly use it for a bear hunt coming up this fall. All my shots will be 30 yards and under. Shooting my htr, love this bow, i know its no speed deamon, but love how it draws and holds. Just wanted to make sure 60 lbs was a reasonable weight. Thank you.
60 lbs is definitely enough for deer. Should certainly be also for turkeys although haven’t taken one with a bow. Cant speak for bear. Haven’t hunted them before but don’t see why it wouldn’t work. I shoot low mid 60 lbs too and works great for me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Black bear are softer than big whitetails. You'll be fine with a properly tuned bow, spined arrow, and tough broadhead.
35lbs will kill a whitetail that is why it's a minimum in many states. The key is shot placement and using a virgin and tuned BH
My HTR is a dream, too. BH's shoot as good as field points. But you definitely want to test yours on paper if you haven't yet. I use Muzzy 4 blade broadheads and they've worked fine on deer. There may be something better for bear but I have no experience hunting them.
My Bowtech Realm SS at 45lbs, pro tuned, spined arrows and cut on contact broad heads will push an arrow clean through a deer at 30 yards through the ribs
60 lbs. is plenty. Just be sure to target a nice arrow weight and make sure it is spined correctly and tuned for your bow. You'll know its tuned well when a bareshaft hits same POI as a fletched, or a fixed BH hits with a field point. 450 grain arrow would be my choice with your setup, your long draw length will sling it plenty fast. Turkeys; use a big expandable for them if mechanical BH's are legal to be used. Fixed BH's go through them like warm butter and if you miss the small vitals it's very likely you won't recover them. A big expandable gives you some more leeway. Study some turkey anatomy pics and be sure you know where to aim from any angle. There's a saying for shooting turkeys with an arrow, "Shoot 'em high, watch 'em die; shoot 'em low, watch 'em go".
I Hunt with a 60 pound HTR also. My arrow weighs 395 grains. I have blown through every deer I have shot at. This year I will be hunting with my 54 pound HTX. You are pulling plenty of weight for anything you were wanting to hunt Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
^This 60# was sufficient for my elk this year. Keep your broadheads sharp. Watch your movements and/or use cover with turkeys. They pick me off more than a smart old doe.
60 lbs is plenty for deer, bear and turkey, with a 30 inch draw and 60 lbs you will have alot of kinetic energy pushing that arrow. As long as you make a good shot you can kill an deer, turkey or bear with alot less weight then 60 lbs. Its all about shot placement at that point. Make sure you have a well tuned bow and have perfect arrow flight and a good sharp broadhead, you will have no problem! Good luck!
