Three times over like 10 years in have had it happen. The first two were begine and easliy rectified. The last time however they Hit me for the tune of 14k from checking account in over the course of two hours. Three weeks of daily aggravation to get it all squared away.

I don't even carry a debit card in my wallet any more. Not worth the hassle.

The pinless charges come to your account in two parts - hold and the posting a few days later. I suspect that was why the new card got hit.

For autodrafts, via ach, the new account number gets exchanged. But for the card charge, I suspect your bank converted the old to new acct number...

Anyway... Same advice, don't use debit cards for online purchases or at exterior machines (too easy to skim or shoulder surf)...

We would be a bit more secure if we only had chip cards. Not perfect but much better than having the magnetic strip.

The way things are going lately it’s looking like by the end of this decade electronic payments and cash will be obsolete and we will be paying for things in beaver pelts and goats

Not really. So long as you can provide a card number & exp DT over the phone... The transaction just switches from real time to a couple day delay via Visa or mastercard.

I was talking about skimmers or the ability for people to walk by you and get all your card data from the magnetic stripe.

That doesn't happen. Mag stripe requires a read head (like cassettes, vcrs and such). Your mag strip isn't broadcasting, nor do most chip on cards. Only nfc cards or wallet apps (typically) use nfc.
