I’ve been 100% on board with this thinking for a long time. At mid body the lungs extend back quite a ways. After hitting two elk in the shoulder in my early 20’s aiming a quarter of the way up tight in the crease another experienced archery hunter told me to quit holding on them like a rifle shot. Haven’t hit a shoulder or lost another one since.
Well that couldn’t have happened any better unless he wouldn’t have run down over a cliff. He came in grunting on the trail of a doe not chasing just following her as she fed along. Took them forever to work to where I wanted to take the shot but she walked by at 18 yards and he was not far behind her. Waited until he got slightly quartering away and drew and settled pin and he was done. Arrow sunk into him good and he crashed down hill. No exit wound but there was blood everywhere. When I finally got to him he had broken off 4-5 inches of his one beam and an inch or so on another point. Bummer!!! I have pics of this deer all summer and told myself that if he gave me an opportunity I would take it. Well he did and probably wishes he wouldn’t have. Very happy. One doe tag left. 3 plus weeks to fill it. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Lost too many deer with it, not saying I'll never lose another, but I think I increase my odds using the old "paper plate" analogy. Truth is truth, luck is luck and skill is often times lucky or unlucky. Targets don't move, easy to stick a dot every time. Put that target on a timed or sound generated movement and see what happens. I think a lot more deer would be recovered everywhere if we all aimed 4 inches back and 2 inches up from that crease. Nothing against it by any means, just had it be and seen it be a heart breaker too many times.
Very nice buck Happy. Fellas...the temps are gonna drop 35 plus degrees from tomorrow afternoon to Sat morning. Crank up the Diesel!
I have to work 3 of the next 18 days, going to be the most excruciating 3 days of the year. I will hunt Saturday(Halloween), but feel Friday is my best chance at less competition. Starting to rethink my original plans of red flannel and blue jeans, but think I still have to do it for the old timers and the fact it can still be done. Not gonna sit on a bucket/stump, but still think you can do it. No real scent measures, play the wind and just sit and wait.
Late update! Snuck in yesterday morning before work to sit a spot I only sat once. Saw one doe and heard grunting for like 5-10 mins but never saw him. Had to be within 75 yards but in the thicket. After the hunt about 80 yards from my stand pulled camera to see what was using the crossing ticket further back into public next to bedding area and private. Another couple shooters that seems to be bedding there. Mathews HTR, Sword 5 pin, Truball release, Goldtip XT hunter 300, QAD 125 gr Swept, QAD rest
Rain or shine I'll be out tomorrow in the morning. Suppose to have a light rain tomorrow morning. Headed to bed now
I have hair almost 3/4" long. Pretty much a hippy by today's standards. Haven't had this much hair in 15 years. Get a haircut and get a real job...
Back home after 3 days on the farm and nothing to show for it. I'm not discouraged; it was a lot of fun and a lot of work. I need to wash clothes and dry some gear out after the rain really picked up and kind of ruined my last evening. Sorry I didn't update, but I had to pack up and haul a$$ back home. Shower was nice! No pics. Already been done, so no need to have another scare. I'll probably take the morning off, but I may go in anyway since I'm basically in the grind mentality now. Good night and good luck. Happy that Happy is happy, btw. Sent from my SM-G960U using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
just got done giving myself my rutcation buzzcut. Probably won't shower again for 3-4 days. Going to spend the evening cleaning the basement from all my crap, then will get up early enough to pack and hit the road by 8a ET, up in MI and camp set up by 1pm, in the woods by 2.
