All you guys investing in heated gear just need to invest in some good heavy weight merino wool base layers. I wear those under early season lightweight clothing designed for when it is 70+ and I stay quite warm down into the 20s. Buy archery gear, not batteries. :poke::jerry::evilgrin:

Got a buddy I got back into hunting this year. Guiding him to hunt in a bit to see if he can get his first ever public land deer. I'll be back in that same bedding area I was in this morning, tomorrow. Two good bucks running in there this morning.

I looked at the chip I pulled over that scrape. My target buck again, but it was at 4:15 am. Soon he will make a mistake

You missed it. He pairs that with light weight clothing to get to 20's.

You could go with a heavier wt outer. Of course, you will have to carry it not wear it or you gonna sweat terrible.

    Yeah no,I didn't miss it.

I was debating on getting some heavy merino wool this year, have it in my amazon cart still. I really like my heated vests and socks, so I decided to go with the heated pants as well. Different strokes for different folks. I like the option of a blast of warmth when I get a chill. I plan on buying some merino stuff during the offseason to try for next year.

I bought some expensive thermals from bass pro a few years ago, 100$ for the tops and $100 for the bottoms, and froze my butt off. That is why I hesitated with merino wool.

Well I live in Arkansas, but the first time I wore them was at Lake Louise in Banff, Alberta, Canada. It was -18C with a wind chill of -27C. Nothing but a regular waterproof coat and ski pants over top on that day. Here is a pic from that day. Yes, that is me and the family playing hockey on a frozen lake.

I would have to invest in light weight merino wool living in Arkansas if I was going to wear it in the normal 50s we have for during the fall. "Winter" doesn't come this far south very often. :lmao:

That's an awesome family pic you got there!

I'm just being my usual smart ass self. I've been wanting to try the thick merino stuff, but have hesitated due to the cost, same with Sitka fanatic gear. I'm thinking of making the investment this offseason to just get it over with, and be done with it.

    Thanks!

It will be worth it. Then, your ass will be warm instead smart (after all you are still in school, too soon to call you smart :poke:) and without the bulk of thick outer layers.

Hogwash! The batteries are a one time purchase, and not that expensive (which I get free anyways, hehe). But I've been freezing out there for 40 years and I ain't going back. Unless those base layers have heating elements, I'm not interested

I think heated clothing is the bomb, that's old people speak for great! It has improved so much from what I remember when I was younger. It allows you to cut way down on bulk, keeps you from sweating if you have to do much walking, and is definitely cheaper than buying some of these high end clothing items. One of the best things about the newer stuff is you provide your own battery. That's good because you can choose the size that works best for your application. After using this stuff I will never go back.

    HEATED PANTS UPDATE:

I ordered the perfect size for me, the XXL. They are like double layered jogging pants. They are the perfect length for me. My waist is size 42-44, my usual length is 28-30.

If you are tall, it might be like wearing capri's.......LOL

    Mud CKing in,

    What a poop show,
Forgot my phone, I was sitting in my stand when I realized it was missing. Climbed down went and retrieved it. Hustled back. I'm a ball of sweat. Probably won't see a deer now. It's only 45 but I'm still a ball of sweat.

Wife is a worry wort. I had a friend die in a hunting accident from a tree stand, awhile ago. and ever since I have to let her know I'm up in a tree or down on the ground. So I had to go get it

Good luck everyone from the muddy sweat ball

So here is the thing with insulating or heated layers, they're great, except when they aren't.

    What?

Add moisture (e.g. Cold and heavy Rain or walking through wet willows) or strong wind and things can start to break down. Through enough power at it and you can overcome these inconvenience... But, this is when I break out another layer of go with the laminates like sitka offers...
