Often when I am hunting I will hear this bird that sounds almost exactly like a old nanny doe blowing in the woods. It is particularly common in the mornings right after sunrise. It’ll do it constantly for a minute or 2 and then won’t make another peep the rest of the day. It’s definitely not an actual deer (unless one of the deer in my woods has figured out how to climb trees) and I am assuming it’s a bird but I guess it could be some other tree dwelling animal. I don’t know where all they live other than we definitely have them in central NC. Anybody know what kind of bird or critter it is?
Just looked it up. That is 100% what I’ve been hearing. Do you think deer ever mistake it for another deer blowing? I.E. if there is one of them going to town right next to my stand should I let one fly and shut it up before it runs off all the deer. I already keep a pair of old arrows with small game points on them in my quiver when I am hunting in case a possum or a coon comes by so it’s not like I would have to waste a broadhead on it.
What video did you watch? All I find are them singing and it sounds nothing like a deer. Now I'm curious and can't stop until I find it haha
I don’t remember but this link has one that is close... in real life it sounds much more similar to a deer. They’re apparently a type of mocking bird so in areas where there are a lot of deer it may be that they are actually mimicking the sound of a deer blowing since they hear it a lot. Below the video there are audio clips it’s the second “Call” clip from the top thats 28 seconds long. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Brown_Thrasher/sounds
