Depends on the situation for me. I've sat at 7' platform height to 30 ft. Most times anywhere in between. Sometimes I am just on the ground.........lol.
"Technique" as in i have nothing telling me to go this high.. like, a "pro" said to do it or an article in a magazine/book telling hunters they have to get this high... I do it because i want to ... not because someone told me i should.... Plus a lot of people dont feel safe higher than 15 feet... don't want anybody coming back at me saying that i told them to climb that high... lol
LOL, 22' seems to be my breaking point. I am usually anywhere from 12' to 22' up depending on terrain and cover. Sometimes you just can't get high and still get a shot because of the understory. Other times I probably need to go higher but it's hard to shoot your bow when you're hugging the tree.
Yup. Climber minimum of 20' to make me comfortable as there is no cover below. Hangers I can go lower, but I like'em high. My favorite hanger is about 15' right now and unfortunately poor cover. I've had a few close encounters this year because of the issue...
Depending on a lot of factors 16' to 30' I've worked construction my entire life so heights don't really bother me. Hunt where you are comfortable. Dan
I have hunted as low as 7' and as high as 25'. On average I would say that I am usually somewhere around 15'. Most of it depends on the type of cover that tree offers, where the deer are coming from, and other factors.
depends on the tree, landscape around it, shot openings and cover ... for me anyhow, anywhere from 15-35 feet, have hunted at alot of different heights
With that said, how do you guys (and girls) feel about safety harnesses? Being I use a climber and never go more than 12-15 feet, I've never used one. I do however use a blind once I'm up for a little cover.
Your joking right? Always, always, ALWAYS wear a safety harness!!!! You've got a 75+% chance of dieing from a 15' fall! (50% chance for every multiple of your height.) I keep stands as low as possible to get the job done because of the shot angle issue that high stands present in getting both lungs.
I guess I'll be purchasing a harness before next season. Again, I never go more than 10-12ft but better safe than sorry.
This isn't a hunting story, but a tree fall ancedote At 15, I had the best treehouse complex for miles. One day, while working on the elevator (yup), I fell, my feet were only 8' off the ground. After a helicopter ride, a week in ICU, and another week of inpatient rehab, I came out cross-eyed and hardly able to walk, brain damage destroyed my sense of balance. I got lucky and turned out reasonably okay in the end, though my balance leaves much to be desired (I couldn't pass a roadside sobriety test cold sober!). Be safe, there's people that love you!
