Does anyone sharpen their unused broadheads from last season?

Probably a dumb question, but I have 3 unused broadheads from last season that I am using again this season. They were on my arrows in my quiver. They are slick trick standards fixed blade. They still seem sharp, but I'm not sure. I need to find a few rubber bands for the old rubber band check. I've always just bought new broadheads every season but didn't this year. Does anyone recommend a sharpener? I looked on amazon and read mixed reviews on some of the ones featured.

 

if they are not used they should be fine. I don't sharpen any heads, I buy replacement blades...I am very lazy about it

 

I replace blades. And I break my broad heads down after my season.

I sharpen mine. Even right out of the package if they won't shave hair off my arm. The newer Muzzy replacement blades just don't seem as sharp as what they used to be.
Currently I just use a draw through type BH sharpener and then hone them on a fine stone.
I like the looks of the "Stay Sharp" sharpener and will probably pick one up to try. It is mainly designed for a two blade fixed, but you can sharpen removable 3 blades by putting an individual blade in it and then running on 1000 grit sandpaper.

I watched a hunting video, probably in the 80's, where a guy built a board with a hole cut in it and then stretched a bunch of surgical type tubing across the opening so they were touching each other with a bit of tension on the tubes. He then took a sharp out of the package broadhead and ran it through the tubing. It cleanly cut all the tubes it touched clear in half. He put new tubing on and did the same with a BH that had rode around the whole season in his quiver the year before (this was when quiver heads were filled with foam and your BH's were pushed into the foam and rode completely enveloped in it). When it went through the tubing it simply nicked two of them but pushed them aside without completely cutting them as it slid through. Exactly what dull blades would do on arteries or veins.

 

Here you go. I bought this earlier in the summer and used it on the Slick Trick Magnums. They can get sharper than in the pack!

I'm looking for one of those for my G5's. Went to sharpen one the other day. Dulled the dang thing. I can't sharpen anything to save my life. I then begged bubby for help. Good thing I alwaya have un used ones hidden away ...hubby may be a wait.

 

My slick tricks dull going in and out of the quiver. Resharpen or replace blades.

 

Fortunately, my quiver doesn't have the foam for the heads to slide into. Tempted to just buy a 3 pack of muzzy 3 blades for 21.99 on amazon and get them tomorrow, LOL

 

I felt there would be different replies- sharpen, replace blades, buy new, etc. Each is a personal preference.

Using a kwikee kwiver, only the chisel tip of my Muzzy contacts the quiver. Mine stay sharp long time.

My dad used montecs and they seemed dull as heck right out of the box. He tried sharpening them every way he knew how and was not happy with the end results. I haven't used them for that reason. I know people are successful with them, and I know people have had a lot of complaints about them. Not that that helps answer your question!

 

Thanks but looking for the jig to sharpen such heads... Hubby has done well sharpening mine.

 

I always just buy replacement blades for my QAD Exodus broadheads, and put them on the night before hunting season. So I can still shoot the broadheads without having to worry about dulling the broadheads while practicing, because they’re already dull. But since they haven’t been shot I wouldn’t even worry about doing anything to them just let em fly!

Nope not a sharpen guy I use the muzzy mechanical. I am putting an arrow thru the upper solar plexus with high KE the deer will rapidly die with 2 holes sharp or not.

 

Stay with KME if you go that route. Way better the stay sharp. And quite frankly RC is ****** bag that nobody in this sport should support

 

I don't sharpen blades and I am apprehensive about replacing blades too. The ones you have from last year should be fine. I bought a broadhead box to store mine in after bow season is over.
