I got my saddle out today...good thing I made the straps really adjustable. Had to do a bunch of cinching. Watched two big boys going at it in the wheat field. Lots of pushing and shoving. They'd separate and then go back at it again.
The decoy will come out this year for sure.

Came really close to filling my elk tag on a spike this morning. Walked right up on it at first light this morning, there was a bull that bugled just over the edge of the cut, so I was moving carefully. I got about 35 yards from the edge of the cut and got onto my knees with the intention of calling to the bull I’d heard, but then I heard some crunching really close by. A few seconds later an elk popped up over the edge, it was such low light it took me a bit to see his velvet spikes. He judged him to be 33-35 yards. I clipped my release to the string and waited for him to turn. He was feeding and working his way towards me, but stayed facing me and quartering to. He suddenly looked up and stared at me for a bit but went back to feeding. About then the other bull bugled again and this made the spike turn and head back over the edge.

My BIL ( brother-in-law is my hunting partner) had walked in below me and was in great position for me to try to call the bugling bull across, so I switched gears and began to let out some cow calls and followed with a chuckle. The bull immediately responded. I went back and forth with him for about ten minutes, he was answering so quickly that he nearly called over the tail end of my calls. I then heard my BIL cow call a couple times and hoped it was to stop the bull for a shot. After that the bull never responded to me again. I waited about 15 minutes and then worked my way down to my BIL’s position.
He said he’d seen just the tips of the bulls antlers as it moved through some young tamarack growth, about 60 yards from him. He called to try to turn it to him, but instead the bull went up a ridge and never bugled again. We think either the wind swirled or my BIL just called to loudly to him from only 60 yards.
    View of the area.

This evening we’ve split up to check out a couple spots we haven’t tried yet. BIL is at a spot where I shot my first bull in this area and I’m hunting a power line swath that was loaded with screaming bulls a couple of years ago. Seeing some sign that looks like they are in the area. I’m headed for the top of the hill in the below pic. Good luck all!

For all you morning grinders I in this thread that appreciate a nice light breakfast before your hunt... Go out and find you some of these bad boys. Stock up and get some in the freezer for the upcoming rut.

My goodness are they good. 2 of these with butter sure beats 2 gas station burritos that are bound to catch up with me at about 8am!

That was my breakfast for years 1 raisin with coffee. Now insulin resistant. So no more of those or any carbs, breakfast or lunch. This should make hunting so much easier. No snacking, craving , no urgency " potty" breaks.

Absolutely nothing tonight. Had high hopes and thought I would at least see some deer. Check the sign in board when I left and there were 3 other hunters in there, seemed like to many people for its size.

There is a conspicuous post missing which makes me think a pesky doe died or frustrated a certain someone.

I'm down and back at the house.

Right at sunset I looked over my left shoulder and a big doe was standing there about 10 yards away. What little air movement there was was going right to her. My Ozonics was running and she was really uneasy and doing the "Ozonics Shuffle".

I got my bow ready because I thought she might be the first in the group of three and I really want to kill Ol' Blowhard. She was alone, though, so I watched as she finally bounced out of the scent stream, stood at 25 yards for a minute or two and then meandered off.

I left all of my gear in the tree and climbed down at dark. I slipped out of the climber, raised it up on the tree as high as I could, turned my headlamp on and turned around to see two eyes staring back at me about 25 yards away. I have no idea what kind of deer it was but it turned and ran. That's another deer spooked.

Tomorrow morning I will try again and hope a buck or that Blowhard doe gives me a shot.

Well, that old girl has bounced out of there blowing her lungs out twice already.

Maybe she’s spooked and won’t come through there again.
