You are in for a treat this winter. The warmth from radiant heat is a completely different experience than what you get with regular heat. Most people just assume that it works like a regular furnace where the hot floor heats the air and then the warm air heats you, but it is actually a completely different process. What really happens is that the floor emits infrared radiation and that radiation is what warms you up. Essentially the same process thats going on when you stand in front of a fire and can feel the heat coming off it except that a fire emits really intense radiant energy from a small area where the floors emit much less intense radiant heat but it is coming from a much larger surface area. Also, the radiant energy from the floors is hitting the walls and ceilings too and causing them to heat up and start emitting radiant heat as well. Once everything warms up it basically feels like you are being bathed in warmth from every direction. It also means that if your house at 70 degrees with a normal forced air heating system then you can set your radiant heating at 62-64 degrees and it will feel just as warm. It really is an awesome way of heating a house.
I grew up in Canada. If my wife didn't turn the heat on when I am not at home, it would never be used.
