Any thoughts or pointers I could gain would be great. Any specific rag material? How often do you refresh and material...any advice will help.
Use an unscented tampon tied to a 4ft piece of string/paracord and soak tampon once your away from your vehicle and in a area where deer will come across the scent, re apply every 75-100yds. Walk circles out in front of you hunting stand in shooting lanes don’t walk straight to base of your tree, I haven’t had good luck with mature deer following them but have had some decent younger deer. Good luck, real men ain’t scared to use tampons.... for hunting means
I never used drag lines very often. The only buck I ever shot using one was when I started the drag at my stand and walked away. My thinking was "how do deer know which way to follow". If you start at the stand then walk away, the scent will get stronger the closer you get to your stand.
I don't put down drag scent trails, but if I did it makes the most sense to me to do as GregH recommends. I would think they can tell which direction to go according to the strength of the scent, so you'd want to start at your hunting location and go out from there.
tried the scent drag thing a few times, had only 1 response, had a really nice 8 point come flying down the trail with nose to the ground totally going the wrong way, thought he would come back when hit end of trail but Nope, stopped looked around did some air sniffing then walked off. Laid a trail on an old logging road, which ran north and south, he came from south.
I've had some good luck with https://wildcarrotscents.com/ I don't use them on every hunt but keep a few in my pack and use when the conditions are right. I'll hang them in scrapes also.
I have used sent drags before never really had Deer follow in on them but once I got to my stand I would hang them on a branch and I have had Deer walk right up to them and stick their nose right in it Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Haven’t used a drag in 15 years. Never found it to do much good. For that matter, I haven’t bought or used any kind of “scent” in over 10 years. Still seem to be seeing deer and knocking down some decent ones.
I started across one of my field's in the dark. Heard two buck fighting at opposite end. I stopped to tie adrag to.yboot. As I did, one of those bucks charged me. Only stopping when I stiod ,yelping and shoving my bow out at him. Now my drags are that of food smells. Especially apple scent. We have to be careful about the whole baiting thing but take cheese clothe and fill a small bag with a sour mash of fermented ground chicken scratch. Then hang out of reach behind or to shooting side.
