Doing my first whitetail hunt in September. Just had a few questions :

-It’s most likely going to be warm (eastern shore MD) and bugs will be an issue. Is using OFF ok? If not, any specific product?

-I’m planning to use the ElimiShield for scent control. Ok? Anything else further I should do ?

-What kind of snacks are recommended for the stand ?

-Can I pee off the stand or should I bring a jar ?

Get a thermacell for the bugs. Skip the Off.
I usually wash my gear in a scent killing laundry detergent
Lil Debby has a good selection. I like trail mix
No jar. Let er rip off the stand. Just not into the wind.

Spray clothes with Sawyer’s permitherin 24 hours before wearing. It seems to not only repel ticks, but I feel it helps with other bugs as well. And as previously mentioned, Thermacell. I think the MR300 is the one I have.

    Snacks:
Peanut Butter and Jelly, protein bars, jerky, and 99 cent Tweaker energy shots are my favorite. Lots of tweakers. I like to be able to see the wind

Good luck and try to see learning opportunities in every hunt

x2 on the thermocell, they work. For snacks get some cereal bars with the loudest wrapper and hardest to open.

    Most Qs answered, but

Be less concerned about trying to control scent than the direction of the wind. Not saying scent control isn't important, rather wind is more important.

Snacks - eat what you like, but be conscience of the noise of packaging and amount of movement needed. I'll sometimes repackage snacks if, say a wrapper is crinkly. I tend to stick early season to a snack like fruit or a sandwich, later in the season I want dense carbs like dried fruit and nuts, jerky, or some candy.

Permethrin for ticks, but thermacell for skeeters/flying insects.

Just look for sign and put up a camera if you have access to one. Pick a tree stand have a good old fashion sit down. Your eyes are the best tool to patterning deer

Thermacell is the way to go, I love little Debbie's but the wrappers sound like a elephant trying to get out if a bag when your in the stand. I take mine out and put them in a zip lock bag, also works for any snack that come in a loud wrapper

I live in Tx where it's always warm during bow and gun seasons. Thermacell becomes your friend.

The other guys said it, but play the winds right. Download you a free hunting app like Huntstand and it will give you ideas of where the wind is "supposed" to be coming from so you can set up accordingly.

Something to keep your mouth and throat lubricated. I use sugar free Ricola ,hard candy, or halls cherry cough drops. No matter how healthy you are guarantee about the time you have a nice deer coming in...you'll end up having to cough. The excitement gets you breathing hard and usually through your mouth. Plus air just dries you out.
Have fun, be safe, and get a dandy.

    1. another vote for ThermaCell. Don't use Off.
    2. Tons of scent control products out there. Only brand I've used is Dead Down Wind and no reason to think it doesn't work. Your biggest help will be trying not to sweat but good luck with that.
    3. Whatever snacks you do bring, consider the packaging. Chip bags can be loud for instance. Put them in a ziplock or old fashioned fold over thin plastic sandwich bag.
    4. Like the other guys said, let it fly with your back to the wind.

    Best of luck!

I repackage my snacks as well into a zip lock back. Many times the yellow and blue make green type of bags open and your snacks end up in the bottom of your pack.

I never bring food to the stand.
I'll be chomping on a raw deer heart shortly, so don't see where it's needed?

Thermacell works well (you can tie it onto your stand or a branch to save space). I suggest keeping a log of weather, wind, deer movement, etc. after each hunt. I started one last year and it brings back great memories, and allows you to realize that you learn something each hunt. Good luck!
