Illinois turkey 2020

For anyone who's season has opened or will be hunting public land. All DNR owned lands shut down to the public until further notice.

 

Doesn't look like there will be exceptions for turkey hunting

 

Crazy that limiting hunting or being outdoors is part of the state government's actions to curb the spread of this thing. I guess that you might stop at a gas station or grab food while you're out? Seems stupid.

Not affected right now, but should this order be extended beyond the 7th, think I'll still be good to go.

I'll just head to the property for some essential activity using my essential travel permissiom for the essential activity of hiking.

Probably take my shotgun with #5 shot for personal protection, open carry on private property, probably get there early enough to watch the sunrise. Hell, with a valid turkey permit might even see a turkey.

 

I’m going shed hunting with my dog next weekend and we will set up some blinds. Probably get a couple stands moved while I’m at it. Everything else is against the rules. Who would of thought this would make me a more efficient hunter lol

How early do you guys go in and get set up?

Everyone I have talked to about going fornthe first time, the first thing they always say is, "you have to get in really early".

Do you go in any different than you would for deer hunting?

 

You just want it to be dark so they can’t see. Especially if you are going to be close to where they are roosted. I try to be set up and in the blind 15 min before first light.

That's what I figured, going to be an interesting first sit lol.

I'll be out Monday and then Friday if needed.

 

I have 2nd season in Rock Island county and 3rd in Jo Daviess here in IL. Can’t wait, I’m headed out in the morning to setup my Rock Island spot with blinds and check cameras.

 

I ended up taking this week off because they wouldn’t let us work overtime Easter week and I needed a break from the craziness that has been going on at work. I’m still not disappointed I didn’t get a first season tag now that I see the weather forecast for tomorrow. Good luck in the morning I know it’s gona be nasty in the north. I start Saturday morning.

I'm not going out in the morning. Not with 40-50mph winds for my first ever hunt.

Don't need that kinda discouragement in my life

So how does weather affect turkey? Heavy'ish rains have an affect on roosted birds either during the night or sunrise?

Wind Monday was kinda a no brainer, but now Friday morning looking at steady rains overnight and towards daylight lightening up a bit but winds somewhat gusty.

I'd likely have to get in the boxblind, or under it in this case.

Is it worth it for a first time hunter or wait until 3rd season opens up?

 

They like nice weather. They are usually more talkative on nice sunny or partly sunny days. Usually. I've killed em in the rain, but it sucked. Go if it isn't beyond your tolerance but bring a vest full of patience.

I just don't want to get discouraged. This weather sucks, had it been nice this week turkey wouldn't have mattered as I'd have shed and morel hunted.
