Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash in California today. I am not a fan of basketball by any means but grew up watching Kobe Bryant and man could he play. Too young, too.

Was Kobe a pilot as well? I haven't seen any confirmed report of this, but for it to be true he would have had to be the pilot as well.

    Hope those rumors prove false.

I am happy that I will never fly in a helicopter again. Had over 20 rides over and back in a helicopter on fires, never felt safe till I was off the ship. There is a reason why they do a special briefing and make people aware of the hazards.

This makes me sick. My dad was a career Marine and hated helicopters. When he was stationed at Pendleton in Ca he got into a crash in a chopper. Broke out a bunch of his teeth. Told us he would never get on one again...Ive never ridden on one and dont plan on it.

Sounds like his 13 year old daughter Gianna was on board as well as one of her teammates and a parent of the teammate. They were headed to his daughters basketball practice.

    Tragic....

Very surreal situation. The Pro Bowl became an afterthought, they canceled the coverage of the X games. I don’t remember a celebrity death with this much coverage in my lifetime (I’m sure Princess Diana and John Lennon we’re similar, but before my time).

The press conference with the Sheriff confirmed 9 dead total. Lots of details still to come out.

Very sad. Kobe was very enjoyable to watch on the court.

Earnhardt's death in 2001 was equivalent to this. Completely different circumstances but the impact was tremendous. First time I cried for someone I did not know.

I hate that in this tragedy, that the other 7 are left in the shadow of Kobe and his daughter. There's a lot of grief out there tonight for more than just the sports world.

I am not a basketball fan and never have been but even at that, Kobe's career and legacy transcended basketball. Even worse is that his daughter was with him... terrible news.

Not too downplay any death but I feel tremendously bad for the lone remaining Altobelli daughter and son that wasn't on the helicopter with their father, mother and other sister. In a blink their entire immediate family gone besides eachother.

I ride in helicopters on a pretty regular basis. Over 100 times in the last year, never have I felt unsafe. I put a lot of trust into our mechanics, our pilots, and my own knowledge of the weather and operations. Its too early to have any definitive answers, but I know what likely caused the crash and if I am right, it was 100% avoidable, which makes this that more upsetting.

Flying in poor visibility with a low cloud ceiling. Pilot probably flew into inadvertant instrumental meteorlogical conditions, (flying visual flight rules) became disoriented and crashed (controlled flight into terrain).

I was actually just reading something online about it and it was bad weather and very heavy fog that day so that makes sense.
