Lot of good advice here. Like everybody else has said focus on the Cardio.
I would suggest having four sons so when you get my age they pack out a lot of the elk for you

There’s a ton of things to do to get in shape. Both cardio and physically.

I’d walk 3-5 miles everyday with 50 pound weight in a back pack. If you can do more weight do it. Works the thigh muscles and cardio simultaneously.

Do some running. Both jogging and wind sprints in 40 yard sprints.

Get some weights and work your shoulders, biceps, triceps and back. Squat a bit too. Keep your reps high, like 20 reps and burn the muscle so blood flows to them.

Do variations of push ups,,, plane and vertical. Vary your grip narrow and wide and medium. Do sit ups for your core and twists to strengthen your sides.

I can go on and on. Eddie Gallagher has what he calls a “minimalist” work out that he put on for the quarantine time. Pretty darn good and he had no weights just body weight resistance.

If I were to do something for an elk hunt and pare it down ? It would be wind and mileage running. Weighted back packing. And weight training, while shooting 25 arrows a day. 5 ends of 5.
