The rut has officially started in the Texas Panhandle. I saw mid size buck chasing doe on my way to stand this afternoon. They were approximately 150 yards away and oblivious of me.

I generally call the peak rut here nov 20-dec 10 so it’s right on cue. Been on stand an hour so far with one more to go before dark. Nothing but a spike has traveled through so far.

Now I remember why I haven't caree to hunt gun season the past several years. Just too many hunters. Even more tomorrow so I'll be back out hopefully Thanskgiving with the bow.

Left and no deer in the cut beans, no deer in the cut corn but one little field, about 100yds by 25yds, had at least 8 out in it. I couldn't slow down and ruberneck enough to getan accurate count.

A leftover pumpkin patch behind a cut corn field. I don't know if other gourds or some other food source was planted in with it but whatever it is they were hammering it. Still had whole pumpkins in it, as it does every year, but have never seen deer in it like tonight. Not aure if the cold November broke them down or preserved them longer than most years or what.

    Found it interesting.

Nothing for me. Time to pack up and scheme for tomorrow. Trip is officially postponed one day and I'm going to be in a tree.

Well folks, I wasn't able to post again until I got back to the house. All of the deer I saw were about 80 yards away when I first glimpsed them on a thickly covered hillside across a gulley.

I was still watching the does feed away when I saw a single deer following the same path. I glassed it and it was a wide fork horn. Just for kicks I grunted and then bleated and it stopped. I bleated one more time and it started working towards me.

It locked up, though, and looked back the way it had come. I looked and I could see a much bigger buck coming towards him. When I was able to get a good look at him my heart jumped. It was the very buck I posted a pic of above. Problem is, I didn't glass him until 5:05 and legal light ended at 5:19.

I grunted again and then bleated. They both started heading my way, but very slowly. By the time they got clear of the thick cover and walked by me at about 40 yards it was around 5:25 and I could barely make out silhouettes.

I was stuck in my stand until 5:45 until they walked away and finally topped the ridge and got out of sight. I got down and got out as quietly as possible.

I am so pumped that he is still alive and still running in this area. I sure do wish he'd have covered the distance a little more quickly.

I'll be back out after him tomorrow morning.

I doubt that he went very far, you’re in his core area for sure.
    Good luck, he’s a beast!

Plans a, b, and c didn’t work out, made a fort out of a cedar tree and saw the big 12, he is definitely alive still. Gun season opens tomorrow but the neighbors seemed to have gotten an early start, 3 shots from the same area. Oh well, maybe they’ll push them to me tomorrow. I have a “good” plan for tomorrow, I’ve been watching a funnel and 12 went through it this evening. Going to setup off of it early am then find a closer ambush spot when I can see.
Pic of my fort: Don’t mind ol scrambles out there, black cat was bad luck. Walked to those woods and then I heard deer blowing.

Alright guys, I have figured out my nemesis. Blatantly obvious, but went unchecked.

Here is my series of posts the morning I killed my buck.

Was just about 3 hours between start to finish.

This Wed. night I remove my self indulged curse.

The buck beard has to go.... but as with my last curse, it has to go last minute. My curse was set in place the night I killed my buck and did not shave the buck beard. In years past I have killed a good buck and a dink same year. I either had the beard for both or didn't for both. Growing it doesn't keep you from your goal, but if you grow it it has to come off when you kill your buck.

    Right?

We'll find out come Thanksgiving morning. I've als9 never killed two bucks in the same season from the same stand. That changes as well.

    Confidence level: 6

Short sit with the rifle this morning, before I get rained out. Deer are supposed to be chasing. We shall see.

Be careful to all headed out in the midwest.

Could be soke slippery roads in spots, especially bridges and such.
