Maybe I should hunt my land more often. Pretty uneventful year......but went by way too fast. In a flash I was faced with my last hunt of the season. I have an inside corner of an on again off again food plot area that usually gets tons of scrapes but never really saw anything decent from the Muddy hang on I put there about 6 years ago. A button buck kept me company most of the evening as the sun was setting on my season. Some recent snow allowed me to see a bit more as a doe broke into sight headed my way looking like she had an admirer on her tail. Sure enough a couple minutes later he comes in with a purpose looking for his lady who is now 25 yards to my right. I am ready when he hits my lane but he takes an extra step when I stop him and has a tree blocking a perfect shot. I put my pin bark shaving close and take what is still a perfect broadside shot albeit a bit back from ideal. THUD!!......and off he goes. Back to back 13 hr shifts coming up and more snow overnight had me eager to pick up the trail but I give him time and that was a great choice. Good blood leads me to a bed of almost totally red snow and staggering tracks in the snow. As I continue to follow I am starting to get worried how far he went......feeling the anxiety we have all known at some point my spirits are lifted when I find my arrow and then the kind of blood that makes you look up from the ground knowing the end is near. Sure enough I flash my light ahead and he is laying 30 yards in front of me but still alive. I quickly shut off my light but not before seeing just how nice he was. Now I know two things.......NO CHANCE I leave him and risk losing him and as I stare into the night I hear the creek running to my right and realize I am WAY down into my land and have a long night ahead.........just how long?? 15 minutes later as we sat together under a full moon he tossed his head and I heard his final exhale. My flashlight verifies he’s done.......and he’s BIG. Now I know I’m totally boned LOL......28 acres uphill between me and the house. I excitedly call my dad immediately as we have shared so many memories over the last 30 years this was sure to be the latest. He is 73 now and was sitting in front of a warm fire when his phone rang......30 minutes later he was standing at my side smiling ear to ear as he listened to his boy tell the story 20 times on a loop in the freezing night. We fought that hog all the way up to my pond.....laughing, swearing, falling and laughing some more until we could barely stand. 73 years old by my side every step of the way.........as always. It’s been a few years but this is the 2nd buck I’ve taken from my land that will go over 130”. My buck, My land, My dad.......too many blessings to count.

I have been so blessed to share the woods with my dad since day 1. I honestly don’t know anything else. Life has changed along the way and we evolved together from weekend warriors eating lunch on the tailgate at state land to our current cabin on 350 acres with over 20 stands, food plots and 6 heated shooting houses........none of that means anything to me without my dad and brothers to share it with
