Saw 4 bucks this morning. A button buck, a spike, a yearling 8 pt and a 2 year old 8 pt that was probably just legal by antler restrictions.

I spent Thursday evening in my rifle blind (with the bow) out by the grain field and watched about a dozen deer at about 300 yards and had two does walk in bow range. A bit later a very nice buck was chasing a couple of does around and got inside of 100 yards. Maybe it's time to go back there this evening with a doe decoy and a bleat can!

I see at least 14 anywhere between 40 and 400 yards away from me right now. That young buck is at about 50 yards and staring at my decoy. He's not the big guy.[IMG]

20 degrees here in the morning with a high of 33. Light north winds. Hopefully big boy shows his face tomorrow.

Saw a lot of deer this weekend just none that I wanted to shoot. Couple real good three year olds just not deer I wanted to tag out on. Hope to get out one more time on my property Friday before the gun season. Hopefully the wind cooperates.

Had some company here over the weekend. It's been flippin cold, windy, and with some frozen precipitation. So I wasn't too upset about not being out hunting for a couple of days. But I did take my guest out and show them one of the ranches I hunt at and took a few minutes to stake out a ground blind in a brushy area right where the big deer was chasing does.

I figure that I can get out there this afternoon and set my doe decoy just up wind of my blind and give it a squirt of doe in heat pee and see if I can get the big guy to walk in front of me on his way to his target.

BTW, the wind is supposed to be blowing out of the due North starting at 10 MPH and dropping off to about 5 by sunset. That mottled area to the west and northwest of my blind is nearly flat on average but with small (2 to 3 foot) rises and falls in the tall grasses and scattered mesquite brush. The does are trying to get to the cultivated field of oats in the southeast corner of the photo (which is to my back in the ground blind) and the buck is cruising in the brush trying to intercept the does on their way to the field.

I had one fork buck come up and investigate the decoy and a few does walked by. The big buck showed up chasing does in the little grove of oaks at the top right corner of the picture ... plainly in my sight, but a good 350 yards to my north. All this open space and no real good funnels to concentrate on makes this a crap shoot. It's easy to see why most deer in Texas are harvested with rifles!

Had a good morning, bucks are moving - just not near my stand locations. So I did something about it after I got out of the tree.

    11-14 at Timber Creek.jpg

I spent the early part of the morning in my XOP stand in the creek bottom and had a good view of the field to my north. The property to the north of the red line is a neighbor who has no hunting on his property (but he's OK with me coming over to get a deer if I shoot one that jumps the fence - he's a nice guy, his wife just doesn't like hunting).

Bucks were chasing does early in the AM at the far northern end of the field. I also saw a very nice buck walking on the fence line where I added the "Saw a nice buck here" text to the photo. That area of the creek bottom is all tall reeds that a deer could walk in and not be seen from the field.

After I got out of the tree I relocated a Hawk Helium lock on stand in a tree that is right next to the property line. Not normally something I'd do, but since the neighbor doesn't hunt I'm not concerned about the courtesy factor. The tree is not really straight, so it's not a terribly comfortable sit, but I plan on giving it a shot tomorrow morning.

Sounds like you've got a good plan for tomorrow! One of my stands is hung on our fence as well. Our neighbor doesn't hunt so I went ahead and asked him before I hung it. He was perfectly find with where the stand was. I've killed several nice bucks out of it since then.

    Good luck in the morning.

Went out to my ground blind in Hamilton county this evening. The big buck on that property was chasing does in my area today and came within 40 yards of me in hot pursuit. I also had a couple of cows walking the opposite direction at about 10 yards so there was no chance to even think about a shot.

One of these bucks is going to mess up soon!

Also, the local paper came out yesterday. We are having an exceptional year in terms of buck quality. There have been 3 bucks that have scored over 200 in Mills county so far this season.

Headed back out this afternoon. The last 4 hunts I’ve been within 35-70 yards of bucks I’d like to shoot. Really hoping tonight it all comes together.
