Checked a few more cams yesterday. Found a new buck on my farm. He was in daylight under my stand twice in the last week.

I sat the stand last night. Awesome spot in the bottom of a thick brushy cow pasture.
The deer stage out in front of the stand. There is a creek crossing right behind the tree and virtually every deer that comes through walks by the tree.

I ended up seeing 7 does, and had a badger walk to the base of my tree, which was pretty crazy.

Back in the same stand as 3 days ago. Bluebird skies this afternoon after a rain front moved through this morning

Yesterday I hunted a big standing bean field next to a crp sanctuary. Pretty good hunt. Saw some young bucks feeling frisky and several does. Passed this little dude at point blank range.

Could you tell if velvet damage or injury caused that? DUDE has some serious genetic potential if 3 or younger with that right side!

Also checked some cams on the way to the stand. This buck just showed up. I think it may be a buck I call Johnny Cash, although I still need to look through previous year pics and verify. If it is him, he is 6 1/2 and is now an 8 instead of a 10. Would be the 3rd year on camera. The date he showed up (10/15) is the 3rd year in a row he has shown up on that date.

Back at it again. It’s been kite flying weather for 4 days straight and I haven’t hunted. Wind is still 20mph but I couldn’t take it any more. Set up on the edge of a corn field in the process of being picked. Combine is running while im in the tree

Well a bit of bad news today. Found a stud 2 year old dead. He had been dead less than 24 hrs when I found him. Not hit by a car and no arrow/bullet wounds. Only injuries I could find were several long abrasions that looked like they were from antler tines, and a distended abdomen from possibly an internal injury, which led me to conclude he was killed by another deer.

A face from the distant past has shown back up. This is a buck I call Roman. He was the first mature buck I ever got on camera in Iowa back in 2016. He was an ancient old deer then, I estimated him at 7 or 8 years old then. This makes 4 years of him on camera, and his rack has regressed a little each year. He is now at least 10, if not 11 or more years old. The rack doesn’t tell the story of what this buck has seen. I can’t help but respect a buck who has lived this long in the wild

Another familiar face showed up this morning. Last pictures of this deer were December 2018. Passed him in 2017 and 2018 with a bow. He’s 4 now. Lots of 4-5 year old 8 points on the farm. Ill probably shoot him if given the chance. He needs to go

Tried something crazy today. My cameras have told me the only place on my farm where mature deer are showing up consistently is right by the road. They are not living on me right now but are traveling across the road at night to feed in my beans. 3 mature bucks doing the same thing. So I just hung a stand 50 yards off the road. I feel ridiculous sitting here, but with the rut kicking off, one of them I bet shows up at some point either right after daylight or right before dark. Hopefully I’m here when it happens.

Well then...pulled a card on one of my leases and a new surprise deer has shown up...he is a substantial animal . Never seen this deer before. But...my prediction came true. First day on this farm I said to my lease partners that the farm will not hold big deer during the summer but will inhale giants during the rut. That appears to be happening. Unfortunately I filled my statewide tag so I can’t hunt this deer, as I am now confined to my own farm. So Im gonna try to get my hunting partner to kill him. I honestly think this deer has a chance at 200”
