Awesome! Still 1 more week for mass here. I got back into an old NY spot Sunday. Went in and replaced a stand. I hope to get out there tomorrow and at least whack a doe. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Dang, I need to check in more often, I get my news from LFTS thread, looks like ol team 22 is putting some points up! My update: Friday: the big 12 I have on camera stepped out about 80yards. I don’t want to believe it, but I think he saw me move in the tree, I don’t know how, but he stepped off within 10min of coming out. No alarm, just walked off. Saturday: One little pt Sunday: clipped (hopefully) a doe right in the armpit but super low. She never really reacted or made any motion that she had been hit. She stood there for 10min and I could see a small blood spot, no exit on the other side. 3 tough hours, no obvious place where she laid down, I think she’s still alive. Heading to Illinois on Friday, fingers crossed I can get on a big one. doe arrow:
I'm going to get out this afternoon to my old spot. Everyone I spoke to out there over the weekend said there are more deer than ever around.. probably because I haven't hunted in there the last 4 years. They also said the large piece behind where I hunt sold 2 years ago (and is for sale again now). The guys that owned it shot everything that moved, so that may be why. I'm hoping to put a doe down tonight or this week in there. I just put a cam in Sunday, so maybe there will be some buck activity.
Well good luck when you do get out! I typically consider October 15th "go time" so from here on out things should be getting better and better. I had one of the bucks I'm chasing on his feet last night about 5 pm. Of course, I was at a different farm and didn't see a darn thing. I'm hoping to make my first trip over to Iowa this coming weekend. I'll likely forego the Sunday AM hunt and spend most of my time scouting for the following week, and then find a spot to pop into for a Sunday evening hunt.
I may be out this evening as well, wife is going to her nieces soccer game and is leaving me all alone...darn...
looking forward to my 5 days in Ohio come November. I'll be hunting Nov. 10-15 so it should be good... i hope.
pressure is dropping here, we are expecting a pretty heavy rain most of the day tomorrow.. did some scouting last night after work (public land 15 minutes from my desk!) and found a few fresh scrapes, some decently worn trails, and a TON of acorns, going to hang and hunt for the last hour and a half tonight after work, basically just hanging the stand, then ill hunt it tomorrow morning for the first hour and a half of light before work, then get after it Thursday afternoon for an evening sit! good luck guys! things should be firing up soon!
Shot a nice slick head tonight on my first sit back in my old spot. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
my season might be turning around... opted not to hunt last night and went with a buddy to try to get permission on a new property, we got it and the area is loaded with deer, not a ton of woods on the property but i am sure they go through the area, going to hang and hunt it tomorrow night!
I got bored an counted our teams entries so far, 340 1/8, I may be missing some but that's a pretty damn good start! Let's see if I can put some points up this weekend in Illinois, be it a fat doe or a monster buck...or a squirrel...well I didn't pay Illinois for a squirrel so that may be out.
I’ve always said it everyone can shoot a doe and a few of us get good bucks there is always a chance to win. Even if everyone gets a doe and a Fergie buck for 100 total pts it could be a win. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
24hrs I'll be on my way to the promise land. Here is the spot I'm going to scout/hunt on Friday afternoon. Take a look at this and see if there's anything you'd look at as well. I walked back here (West side of water) last year with a climber and got my a$$ handed to me. It was super thick and I could barely make it in there; this is why I bought a tree saddle. Green Arrow: Pine trees overlooking thick CRP Blue Arrow: Thick CRP (Might be cut) Red Star: Possible Stand if I can get to it Yellow Star: Possible Stand Orange Star: I forgot to move it, but the "balls" looking trees to the left of it looks like a funnel(?) That long stretch from NE to SW corner is a deep ditch w/water (Funnel?)
I think all look like great stand locations depending on the wind and the status of the CRP and any other crop growing up by that long stretch
Wind is looking like it will be ESE, plan A might be put on the back burner, wind is between 2-6mph. Working on a Plan B.
CRP is pretty thick, I don't think they planted anything this year but might be some left over clover from last year in that green field up top.
I should have boots on ground in Illinois in 6 hours, hunting through Sunday unless I fill both tags early.
Good luck! I'm heading out this afternoon for a quick hunt on our local farm. I'm going to put Brad (guy that works for us and helps run this contest) in a spot where I think he's got a chance at a deer tonight. He hasn't shot a deer with his bow in a few years so I'm on a mission to get him one. Hoping he connects! Tomorrow afternoon I'll be hunting somewhere, just not sure where yet. It all depends on how my son's baseball tournament goes. If they win and play again I'll have to stick local. If they lose, I'm headed to the lease. Sunday I plan on making my first trip of the year to Iowa. Will likely spend a few hours scouting during late morning and early afternoon, then find a spot to set up for the evening. I'm trying to narrow down an area to focus on when I return on the 27th.
