Going to try and set up some mock scrapes this year something that I have never done before. Usually would just put some scent out on a wick when I was hunting. So question #1 How close to your stand do you want this to be? #2At what time of year is too early and is now ok? Yah I know that's 2 questions in one. #3What scent should you start out with. #4 When should you change to a different scent? And#5 What product do you all have as a favorite. Heading up to the cabin this weekend to check on trail cams and wanting to know if now is the time to get them started. Heading back up the third weekend in Oct. should I change the scent then? Thanks for any tips
https://www.whitetailhabitatsolutions.com/blog/how-to-make-a-mock-scrape I use Jeff Sturgis' method. I have had most of this work within days and generally agree with most of what he says. Plus he has like 30 years experience at this stuff.
Yeah I burned thru about six of his videos about a month ago and have continued watching when I get the chance. The grapevine over a scrape produced for me in about 2 days. Crazy
Been using that grape vine trick, hanging by 550 cord about 4 feet off the ground roughly. Then use a hefty branch to scrape the ground under it. I NEVER use store bought urine type scents. I urinate in the scrapes myself only, and start them all in August. I’ll “refresh the scent” anytime I walk by a scrape(only while walking to and from stands during season) and nature calls. Doesn’t take long and the bucks find them and start visiting them regularly. Previous years’ mock scrapes continue to get used throughout the summer months! I have dozens of trail cam pics of bucks using the grape vines as licking branches in all stages of antler growth, including after shedding in late winter. The previous year’s scrapes, typically get re-opened by mid-October without my help...but the licking branches (grape vines) get used all year.
