Pictured is a 4" stainless steel Schrade knife with a gut hook at the end of the spine. I am very, very pleased with how sharp I've gotten this knife, but I'm not sure how to sharpen the gut hook. Any suggestions? Thanks!
That is for opening up the skin on the belly, not for the guts. You wanna know how I get that sharp? I send it to the knife sharpening guy.
Small round stone to fit the groove. Check with a gunsmithing supply as Brownell's. Don't have anyone locally to sharpen knives, saw blades, etc. anymore.
I use a smallish jewelers file that I use to sharpen fishing hooks. You don’t have to get it terribly sharp to work well being you rip more with it and the tightness of the skin helps it “split” open as you rip down. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

What I was taught a gut hook was an attachment on a smaller pocket knife that uni use to take the guts out of a game bird with out cutting the gut cavity. I see your point guess I was taught different.
You should be able to use the sharpening rods that come with some kits depending on the opening of that hook. Or you can buy something like this. https://lansky.com/index.php/gu/
I've had one of these Work Sharp sharpeners for a long time and it is a fantastic sharpener. It never occurred to me to use the purple belt to sharpen the gut hook on my Buck Zipper though. I'll have to try that.

Got any electrician buddies? The tungsten rod out of a light fixture might be about the right size and work decent. I've used them to hone the finishing edge before, but didn't think about trying one on the gut hook. I'll be trying it now though.
