Hunted last night. Saw a spike and another deer, not sure what. The spike came right under me. Would have shot him, but no good opportunity. Back in there tonight, same location different tree. Its a funnel where deer come off an island to the mainland. Nice spot.

When I first saw him I was hoping he was the first in a bachelor group but he just had to be a loner.

It's 8:00 here now and if another deer moved through here I'll be surprised.

I should add that I'll still sit until at least 9:30 because it can always happen.

I'm trying to decide if I really want to do the afternoon sits today through Thursday. The heat index is supposed to be over 100.

Maybe what I should do is as it gets closer to the full moon this weekend is sit from dawn until noon or 1:00 pm and skip the heat.

    Thoughts?

That is what I would do. Until there is a serious cold front, I think hunting evenings in that kind of heat is a waste of time. Setup between bedding and water, I bet you kill something coming to get a drink in the middle of the day.

Not sitting in a stand, but archery elk season is in full swing. Went to camp last weekend, elk aren't being vocal yet. Only had one elk encounter on my Friday evening hunt. Walked in to my "old faithful" area, always holds elk and has decent sign. Sat down wind from a cut edge, it is where an old clearcut comes up against a 5 year old cut, and both border thick timber on top of a fairly steep draw that the elk bed in. I was sitting on a wind fall log with good cover behind me. Gave a few cow calls. Only 5 minutes later I start hearing some popping and cracking in the new growth cut, the trees are getting to be about 15' tall or so in it. Gave a few more cow calls. Kept hearing the noise here and there, like a cow feeding or a small bull by himself. About 30 minutes after I sat down a spike walks out onto the fire break between the cut and timber edge. He was about 100 yards out. I say spike but he had little forks at the top on both sides. He looked around for a bit and then just started feeding and was working his way towards me. I didn't dare call, so just waited it out. He got only about 80 yards from me and then walked into the thick timber. I gave him some more cow calls and he popped back out, and after looking my way for a bit went back to feeding. The wind started swirling a bit and I think he got a bit of my wind at one point. I was wearing a cow in heat wafer and he lip curled at one point like he got a nose full of it, but I think he also got enough human scent to not want to commit. I zapped him while he was broadside at the closest he ever got to me, 74 yards. He then walked back into the timber. I moved about 40 yards closer and tried some more cow calls, but couldn't ever lure him back out. Whole encounter was probably an hour long, fun encounter.
Shot a grouse with my blunt arrow and my BIL also shot one. Only shots fired this weekend.

Not sure of any water sources close by. I havent looked at the creek I'm hunting close to to see if there are any water pools remaining.

If there are that might be a good bet.

My elk encounter wasn't really a "live from the stand" thing...zero service in most spots...should I start an "encounter" thread or is it fine here?

Well folks, I didn't see any more deer.

I won't be hunting this afternoon and possibly not tomorrow.

My sister texted to let us know that our mother, who is in hospice and is in the late stages of dementia, now has pneumonia.

I scrambled back to my brother's house and we are now on our way to Jonesboro, AR.

We will most likely be coming back tonight but I'll check back in later.

Sorry to hear that, there's more important things than deer hunting.

    Good luck with everything.

Heading back out shortly to the stand. Maybe I can actually get in a hunt this evening and the stars may align.
