I nominate DNOODLES for captain. He has the prestige status as "Grizzled Veteran" Definitely knows his way around the forum and has a great status.
Lets get this vote done as we need a captain. Today the contest officially starts We need a captain to decide on what to do about the two unchecked team members and also for a team name. Good luck to the guys already hunting.
Iowa buck in 2014. Right side was early season. Bottom left was about 30 seconds before I put a rage in the pumphouse
Old Kansas buck on his way down. Management buck taken with a Mathews Switchback and a Rage two-blade. The bloodtrail led to a river close behind my stand. I had to follow the river down to where I finally found him in a snag.
I was gonna nominate Spiker as he has been really pro active and also is obviously an accomplished hunter. I'll do it since Spiker doesn't want it. thanks for the votes of confidence; I'll try not to disappoint. we gotta get a name, then. So far the only ones with more than one vote are: Blood Thirsty Savages Big Tines Matter I will abstain from voting b/c BTS is mine. Technically the 2 derelicts have until Sept 9 to check in- alternates won't be chosen until Sept 10. I'll email Kaufman on Sept 8 if they haven't checked in by then
I thought the savages was bad ass. The other obviously is mine, so need the others to decide! Lead us to the ship captain noodles!
well boys, my hunting season has completely changed. This weekend me and my cousin (hunting partner for 13 years) went up to do some early mid-Michigan public land scouting. We've been hunting this area as a big group since 2007, he and his dad (my uncle) have been hunting it since 1998. We had a feeling the DNR was going to log at least some of it since for the past 2 seasons they have been re-surveying it and tagging trees with red paint. Sure enough, last winter they went in like the second coming. Clear cut a huge section. I'll try to map it out. each little square is 5 acres for scale white is private anything inside a blue line is public Blue diagonals are open hardwoods (oaks/maples with scattered mature pine) Swamp is a cedar swamp red diagonals is new clear cut- used to be all oaks and scattered pine green dots are 25 year old clear cut- super thick aspen/poplars; can barely walk through it (although much more passable than 5 years ago- but still too thick to bow hunt) purple is CRP yellow is corn aqua is buckthorn getting so thick can't walk through (5 years ago was no issue) so it's going to completely change the way deer move. That I can deal with...worst part is they took about 60% of the remaining hard woods- which is going to really concentrate the hunting pressure. I don't know what to think about it. I actually rarely hunt those red sections anymore as it was usually pressured was pretty hard; and while I was almost guaranteed a small buck I never saw any big buck activity. I usually most often hunt to the open hardwoods E of the swamp (across from our camp which is that little blue corner next to the swamp) or last year hunted and was planning on this season hunting the blue open woods to the SW of the swamp. We scouted the whole area this weekend. TONS of movement in the super thick green dot areas. Couple fresh rubs, trails beat down into the dirt. But no way to hunt it. Just too thick, even for ground hunting.
Unfortunately no. After 4 days of hunting dawn to dusk, attempting to severe my thumb, bear stealing one of the bait buckets, rain & windy weather &kicking my other half out of the stand...i said screw it. Im going fishing. At least come home with something! Limited in walleyes & northern! Bunch of storm fronts moved in. 3 out of 8 hunters tagged out. Week one, only 2 of 10 hunters tagged out. None of the bears were over 140 lbs. Unusual for that area Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk
Your scenario is much different than what we have here in TX. I'd probably focus on the patch of woods directly south bordering the corn. You have a solid access from that direction or no? If that doesn't work id be set up off one of the edges of the clear cut that borders the open hardwoods. On my lease they clear cut it a couple years ago and tons of activity was made by deer traveling the outskirts of the wood line& clear cut.
Finished my water hole &last plot. A little late, but better late than never! I had made a "redneck" waterhole last year &was amazed at what came in. Found a sweet deal with someone giving away a small pond liner. Works perfect! Will see what the deer think. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk
if you're talking to me, *south of the corn is not pictured and is also just more corn and all private. North of that (if you got flipped upside down) is easily accessible from a main road and that's where all the pressure will be. I actually think it's awesome for the deer; just that I am worried subtracting 60% of the woods will concentrate all the hunting pressure. Regardless it's going to change everything. Be a few years before we get it figured out. *EDIT- Disregard; I get what you were saying now. It already was usually hunted pretty hard. Now, seeing as it's the only decent set of hardwoods unless you access the back section from the swamp corner to the north it's likely only going to get hit harder.
Thanks to dnoodles for Taking on the Captain position. I believe it was the only choice. I also offer any help needed to the Captain and our team. I do like the name savages also.
