I have an old Benjamin .177 and it dispatches coons, rabbits, squirrels and possums just fine. I live in the heart of OKC around a bunch of tree huggers and they have yet to catch on or figure out where I get all those rabbits to make my delicious hasenpheffer.
I have a Crosman "Nitro" in .177 caliber, break action, piston powered. Retail is $129.99, but you can find them cheaper -- got mine for $99.00 on sale. Comes with a 4 power scope mounted, enough "punch" for any small game - 920fps makes it a pretty flat shooter - makes target practice fun too.

.22 shorts...made for the in-town sportsman. Sounds like they'd be just as quiet if not quieter than some of the air rifles. Honestly though, I'd just trap the raccoons and buy the air rifle you want anyway.
In college we had a family of bastard raccoons that would scare the hell out of us by the dumpsters. Well a good blood alcohol of .25 made my friends and I create sticks with knives attached to the end in order to drunken hunt the bastards. .22lr with a can. ...oh yeah, you're in Hellinois, nevermind. I have a 'high power' .177 cal air rifle. It's one of those break barrel/spring piston types. 1000fps. Having killed various things with it, I would not trust it to reliably kill raccoons unless you only took close head shots. Like 10' or under close. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
These are really quiet. I’d say just as quiet as a high end air rifle. They don’t cycle a semi auto gun though
I picked this up for a similar reason, plenty of power to penetrate the skull of many critters. Plus I finally found a use for all of them useless phonebooks I find on my porch. Paked them in a box and duct taped it tightly, added some sticker targets and had a shooting range in the basement. I've got a Benjamin Trail NP and it's pretty darn powerful. Took some time getting it sighted in correctly but now that it is, it's great. Only downfall for this one is it's a break barrel single shot. Really want to get a PCP sometime but currently have many other things I want/need to spend a grand on.
