The county I hunt in Wisconsin gives 4 doe tags per license (gun and bow, that's at least 8 doe tags per hunter) plus multiple bonus doe tags. We manage the 100 acres we hunt but the farmer to the north has 15 guys shoot everything they can on 200 acres. They destroy the herd year after year. I understand deer need to be killed. But I don't like that in a 300 acre part of the county hundreds of doe could be shot. Id like to see a limit of tags per property. Thoughts?
No perfect senario. MN structure s thier deer season in different zones every year. However, they usually miss what they try to accomplish by a year or two.
You guys must have deer coming out your ears, we get one tag a year in ID. Two if you manage to draw an "extra" doe tag. My experience with the F&G says you're asking an awful lot for them to manage game that well...might cost them some revenue.
Well, it all depends on deer density and carrying capacity in that area. That does seem excessive for anywhere though. In Missouri, we used to be able to buy as many doe tags as we wanted for both Archery and Gun season. That actually seemed to work out just fine for many years, but back in 2012 we were hit with a major EHD outbreak and that plus a liberal harvest policy lead to a major reduction in the the heard totals. They estimated that we lost about 25% of the total heard, but in some areas it was much worse. We are still recovering and they have limited the number of antlerless gun tags to 0,1 or 2 depending on the county. We can still buy as many archery antlerless tags as we want, but the reality is gun season is where the vast majority of the harvest totals come from.
A limit on private property could be imposed by the owner of said property. Maybe you could talk to the neighbor about putting limits on his land for the sake of helping the local herd? Maybe he could charge more per lease to reduce the number of hunters but not cut into his income from it.
