I've only seen one snake in the woods while hunting, a black and yellow garden snake. I screamed like a school girl at a justin beiber concert.

I can't imagine hunting on the ground like I have been the past few years (Laying prone sometimes) and having a snake slither towards me or on me. Glad I'm going back in a tree this year!
I grew up in British Columbia and hunted every year among mountain lions, black bears, grizzlies, and wolves. Now I live in Arkansas, give me the big predators, screw the snakes. Kill all the poisonous snakes.
Usually, you can see a bear coming and get the spray and handgun out. Snakes are just whap and your F'ed

Then again, here I haven't seen more than the typical non-poisonous gardner, bull, red belly, etc. I'm originally from SoCal, and lived in areas where poisonous things were all around. Not just snakes but spiders, scorpions, etc. Saw my share of rattlers, diamondbacks, etc. Was even in a dammed river when a diamondback came swimming in it. About the only snake that really bothers me is the cotton mouth.
We have rattlesnakes, but all the places I hunt and fish are too high of elevation for them except for one deer hunting spot, and they are in the den by the time I hunt there. I would hate to have to worry about them when hunting, and especially when walking river rocks fly fishing, give me cougars and black bears any day. MnMoose, you can keep your grizzlies.
Usually snake boots are not very good when you are hiking mountains all day. Also, especially mule deer hunting in the badlands, there is a lot of crawling and kneeling when stalking bucks, and then the snake boots are irrelevant.

I remember when I used to be in VA we couldn't mess with the canebreak rattlesnake. (if that's how you spell it) but I would roll up on some massive and fat 5 and 6 ft rattlers up there. Very pretty snakes but a heart stopper walking up on one.
Now why'd you have to go and post that.... I've been scouting in central and eastern nc the past couple weeks and have been on pins and needles, watching every step, so I don't step on exactly that! I've considered myself lucky not to even see one. Now this image has got me bent out of shape again. I'm getting better at seeing a black snake but the blasted markings of a copperhead and cottonmouth still bend me slam out of shape. So much that I usually need a cool-down period of 3 days before I step back in the woods.
I don't mind snakes at all. Granted, I will jump if I spot one next to me but I won't kill one out in the woods. Heck, it is their home after all and not mine. The only time I'll kill a snake is if it's a copperhead or a cottonmouth that's in my yard. Then it's a danger to my dogs and my grandkids. Other than that they get a pass. Oh by the way, there is no such thing as a poisonous snake.
Just an average Thursday down by me in southern Illinois. Big girl living under my front step at the moment. Never had a problem til this year, they've definitely migrated up to the house more. Other than that I've had these things fall out of trees when I've walked down the creek edge and it's nerve wrecking none the less. But not one has ever really threatened me. Not even the one under the porch right now. So I may pay someone to relocate her as a good show of faith. My craziest experience was walking across a beaver dam like a moron not realizing that I had 5 slithering through the branches where I was at. They blend in real well, so I survived but I'll never do that again! Don't get me wrong I've killed a few over my years, I'm no fan of poisonous snakes!!!
