Look at this section of the James. Prime smallmouth territory. I need to spend some time getting to know these places. Headed out in a bit in 90 degree weather to try and catch my first smallie in a decade.
My oldest son spent July 5th with me. We played 18 holes of golf in the morning and put the boat in to catch some bass in the afternoon. It was a great day! We caught a lot of bass and some that were 4 lbs. or better.
You should get one of those Huk fishing masks for that ugly mug of yours. Kidding 4+lb bass are so fun. Hard to find too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Mission accomplished. Hook 3...landed one smallmouth. First in a decade. Water was real warm and I need to get a 6 foot 6 pole and a real with a better gear ratio to quickly get into those fast moving fish. Most fun I've had in the water in a long long time. Looks like the James River is gonna be my new fishing home Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
I forgot to talk about the highlight of my day. Got hooked up on a rock. Get into the area to unhook and a 3 foot long alligator gar comes out from under a rock and swims right past me. Scared the living hell out of me. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
Went to fish the hole on the Mississippi I did when I was a kid. Damn river is still high. Came to the realization than I can no longer wade amongst the rocks I just can't react and keep my balance. Next summer will be better. We did catch a couple little sallies and my wife caught a nice channel cat.
Kinda sucks surface temps in area lakes is 83 degrees and the alge is in full bloom. Did I complain about the high water in the Mississippi?
Went to a little lake nearby because of the weather, water is almost 85 degrees. Crazy night fish were not hitting at all, I said the hell with it and tied on a spoon in a perch pattern. It was on we were catching bass and good size sunnies all on a spoon. There was a guy fishing off the dock when we went out we came back in and I asked if he was having any luck nope just little ones. I dumped a 1/2 dozen keepers in his bucket he was very thankful.
I biked that section of the trail awesome trail but the whole time along the river I was thinking how good the bite must be!
So wife and I snuck up to the pea green lake that is just north of me. I was not expecting much based on the cold front that went thru. Once again the spoons came thru wife bought a northern and While I was explaining not to just simply reel the spoon straight that you need to jig and twitch it, I hooked a nice walleye. After the skunk was off I just sat down relaxed and had a few beers, beer just tastes better out on a lake.
Took a quick 2 day trip with the fam. Saturday morning while they slept in I grabbed my rod and walked to the lake. Very limited access so I had to cast into the WIND. After throwing a heavy spinner a few times this nice pike slammed it. First pike in a decade That nasty foot is a size 15, so that pike was a very nice surprise.
So last Saturday My wife and I went up to fish with my daughter and son in law. We got done fishing and headed back to their place and I left the boat with them. My son in law loves the boat and wanted to drive when we fished and based on my travel schedule the next 2 weeks figured they would get more use than me. Kinda regret it I could have been working on mounting the rod holders, and a few other tweaks. Biggest regret is I left all my rods and tackle in the boat so I can't go fish the river.
