A friend that doesnt hunt has a farm, this farm has chickens and a pretty serious issue of the fox killing the chickens. They have asked me to kill the fox, yes I have already spoken with game and parks on making sure its all done legally out of season. Question is bow? crossbow? rifle? It would be a ground blind type situation with a good understanding of where the den is, where it comes out etc. I do have an electric call as well if needed.
Chicken in a wire cage either morning or evening go with a 12 gauge, I have shot them with 4 shot and killed them.
Depends on your time, skills, or need to take the critter out ASAP. Start with the bow. If you can’t close the deal then reach out with the AR. Go Pro handy???
I'd say, it depends on the environment, too. Houses, streets, neighbors nearby ? People that could be hurt by a ricocheting bullet ? For distances below 30yds, I would go for a crossbow. You could shoot from a lying position, i.e. better cover. Foxes are clever.
Trapping & poisoning is probably less honorable, but will have the same end result. Not sure about the North American fox population. High human population density (and relentless tracking/hunting) in Europe created a high selective pressure, resulting in the proverbial smart fox. Same with the remaining wolf population. They seem to sense the human intention, and evade any measure.
I’d try to trap first then if no luck shotgun with #4 or larger shot and make a hide by the chickens somewhere. No sense in trying to call when you have live bait. Bow or crossbow only if you wanted the challenge but sounds like you shouldn’t take any chances.
