Eying a beautiful Howa M1500 Chassis. Question is .308 or 6.5 Creed :eek2:. It comes in either, but esp for combat, and of course survival hunting, not to mention reloading is the .308, or the 6.5 Creed better?

Haven't bought into the CM hype, so I'd go with the .308 all day long!

Im looking for a good survival, yet also excellent combat bolt action for long range.

I'm all about the .308 but I do have a Howa M1500 in .204 Ruger, great gun.

We burn up 6.5 creedmoor accuracy barrels in about 1500 rounds in the lab. Not that you couldn't still kill stuff but the groups do start to open up.

.308 barrel life is better and the ammo is everywhere. I would pick the .308 just on bullet/ammo availability.

6.5 CM is a good caliber but lately, it's waaay overhyped. For hunting purposes, a .270 win beats them both.

Having typed all that, I personally would buy a 6.5 CM before I bought a .308 win. (I already own some 30 caliber rifles)

Havent shot a 6.5 creedmoor but I've got extensive experience with the 7.62x51. In the right hands its definitely a capable caliber. I'm not quite sure what you mean by combat bolt action and as a survival weapon you need to take into account weight constraints and a chassis rifle is probably not the best for that. If you're talking a SHTF scenario, I dont really foresee having to play the role of sniper but neither the caliber or rifle will make you into a long range shooter without the proper training.

I'm getting off topic but the howa's do like nice I'm just not sure if it's the ideal gun for the particular scenario you describe. If you're set on that rifle and in those calibers, I'm going 7.62x51 every day.

(I shouldnt post drunk, with my gung ho for a civil war friends lol) anyhoo! Im wanting a good long range rifle for practicing taking really long shots. Never did it before. Saw the m1500 while drooling over the M1A1, and was wondering overall if 6.5 creed or the .308 is better overall. .308 and 6.5 is what the store near me carries in the m1500. Both look good ballistically, but overall picture just wondering which one is better.

.308 and 30/06 were used as sniper rifles in Nam. Gives you an idea of their performance. The 6.5 caliber has a high ballistic coefficient. Me? I would opt for the .308 as mentioned for the availability of ammo. The 30/06 and .308 are some of the most versatile calibers on the market- groundhogs to grizzlies.

Haha I'm tracking what you're saying now. I'd still pick a 308 personally as a very versatile cartridge. I've spent a ton of time with the m24 and m110 both chambered in 308 (7.62x51). While I do have a soft spot for bolt guns, if you're not married to the howa, I'd consider a precision ar10 platform as a long range battle rifle. Properly put together you should expect similar performance accuracy wise and dependent on barrel length, equivalent ballistics. A semi auto platform also gives you the ability for a lot faster follow up shots, more ammo capacity, and a more versatile platform.

I hear a lot of good things from a buddy that owns one chambered for .308. I've seen some 500 yard groupings that are impressive for a rifle straight out of the box.

My personal favorite when it comes to Ruger rifles is the M77. I own three, 7mm mag, .308 and 25-06 Rem. All are absolute tack drivers. The .308 is my favorite rifle w/ a 6x Unertl, I can knock a flea off a ticks a$$ at 500 yards with that rifle. But I'm guessing you are going for a higher round capacity rifle..

Well lol Im drooling over .300win power. Was even as I was looking more, considering a.338 Lap, buuuut that might be a bit tooooo much. Round capacity here is capped at 10, since well traitors run this idiotic state.

Decided, bought and now waiting the dumb 10 day waiting period for a Howa M1500 black and white American in 6.5 Creed. Thanks for everyone’s thoughts between the two rounds :usa:

Enjoy your gun. I think you'll be happy.

    But...10 day waiting period?!! Dang.

Oh, and here I am hunting doe antelope with a .338 lapua. In the picture where I'm holding the doe, I shot from that ridge behind me. :)

A well doped out gun is a beautiful thing.

After I get mine, I know that entire day Im going to be like a little kid setting up the stock and learning how to zero in the scope.

And that's why you don't piss off Christine hahaha. I was actually in town today running some errands and stopped to pick up ammo. Store buy ammo from had a 338 sitting behind counter all set up for like 2800 I think. Didn't look real hard seeing as out of my range to buy. Ha.

I'd agree with this. A 16" and 20" barrel would fit multiple needs. Interestingly enough, I was just considering picking up a 20" barrel for my Bushmaster. I do have a couple of bolt guns too: .22lr Savage MK-IIF and a .30-06 Thompson Center. None of them get the range time they deserve though. I'm either working too much, or shooting my bow. ;)
