So everything that the TV hunting industry has produced has been a detriment to real every day hunters.
I suffer from none of these! I am an amazing woodsmen, I have laser focus and I'm as tough as they come. I'm also more humble than anyone!
Staying awake. May not seem hard in October and beginning of November, but after that, it’s a little tough when it’s 18 degrees out.
100% this I freely admit to being/feeling like a hypocrite on this one. The fall was precipitous and fast. As recent as '13 both my main hunting states/areas were cell phone dead zones and I would regularly do all day sits without anything electronic to entertain distract me. Enter 4g...... Now I post 10+ times per sit in the LFTS thread; read news, check the weather, text my wife, buddies....order crap on Amazon, pay bills, hell sometimes I even work from the stand. Disgusting.
I have a 8th and 9th 8. Appreciation that having great property takes more than access. I work in my property all year yet I always have a few guys I let hunt that don't do anything. 9. Ever since the release of hunting videos people's scope has been going off tilt. I get it, every hunting show and video online is showing Booners but that's not realistic. If you miss it see one be accurate in what it was. I know my deer... You didn't miss a 170 and if you reviewed the trail cam pics you would know which deer you saw. These might be "me" problems but I am willing to bet others have it happen as well.
I have been bowhunting for 52 plus years, I have learned to hunt the hard way, experience and the school of hard knocks, I have felt sad for most of todays hunters as they have not put in the time to learn how to hunt, most only know how to shoot !!! Last year I came upon another hunter who informed me that the turds all in front of him are deer turds, in my inspection they were porcupine droppings ??????? enough said
I'm going to hunt rabbits with stones. Thought about bringing down a brown bear with a club, but unfortunately they are extinct here ...
Still can not fathom how some mock my approach, I am nice till it is time to not be nice then I sit a couple hours and shoot a buck, some people mock the fact I do not sit in a tree for days to hope to get a shot.
Hey! I've killed more than a few rabbits and a raccoon with stones. Clubed 2 raccoons to death with a big limb I was trained as a fast pitch soft ball pitcher, it's one reason I am a good instinctive shooter. They didn't have compounds and fancy sights when we were taught to shoot as kids. We shot sling shots and BB guns. Were taught to fly fish and cast so hand eye coordination was second nature. Unlike today were kids are taught indoor sitting thumb eye coordination on a TV screen.
I wouldn't have mentioned it, if I hadn't the capability. Even being the smallest boy during school, I had always been the best at throwing. And yes, slingshots and dad's BB gun, too. BTW, actually no rabbits here where I live, just hares. If you spot one early, an easy kill, you could get below 10yd distance. Until you get too close and he runs off ...
We grew up in some of the best of times, I feel bad for my grandsons. Even with their dad they won't have the same type of learning ,independence, and use of imagination we did. Moms kicked us out the door in the morning and there were two rules home for lunch and dinner, don't leave the neighborhood without permission and other kids with you..
I lived in an area that you could walk out the door with a loaded shot gun to go hunt small game and nobody cared.
#8 Everybody who hunts my property more than one time offers me a backstrap from any deer they harvest...I don't require them too, but I am certainly more inclined to invite them back if they reward me for my hard work during the off season and my investment in deer stands and property taxes. Some folks will even give me a ham or shoulder too, which makes me a lot more inclined to bust out the grinder and help them convert their trimmings into burgers and sausages. The only exception is I will not accept anything from somebody who gets their first deer at my place. They keep everything and get to leave with a bunch of meat, an experience they'll never forget, and a free lesson in field dressing, quartering, skinning, boning out, silver skin/gland/lymph node removal, and how a properly grilled heart is the best cut of meat on the planet.
