Been wanting to scout this place since last year. Finally had a chance today. I'm glad I did bc I thought I was dealing with a half mile long island based on aerial maps. Nope. Like 3 to 4 smaller islands separated by maybe 20 yds of water each. Jumped two different bedded deer, one of which probably was a buck. Found some doe beds and a ton of sign. I'm looking forward to hunting it this fall. I put out a mineral rock and trail cam near an intersection of trails. I'll probably leave it til mid August then pull it for Intel. Minimal pressure. Looks like a great stop. I love hunting river bottom travel corridors near the water. Havent found any island spots to try yet though. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Dude that last pic, those cows not deer. Just wanted you to know that before you take one, they are a ***** trying to load up in the truck when they're dead and the guys at the processor's will never let you live it down. That island looks awesome and I am willing to bet it's a haven during rifle season. We used to hunt an island on the Gasconade river in Missouri and it always had nice bucks.
Seeing that first pic, not sure I could have left it to trot through the woods. I hunted islands on the Mississippi back in highschool, was a special draw site so had annual pressure but still had a lot of deer on them. Was called long island which I believe was dubbed for the biggest which was 3-6 miles long. I never got to see it, but a lot of hunters would post up on heavier trails along the edgesof water. The IL side of the river was a public land area as well amd they would pressure/bump the deer out and they would swim across to the islands. Still amazes me how you could have distinct trails leaving/entering an island on such a broad and deep river.
Man that looks awesome! I'm sure you'll have success there this season. Blessings...........Pastorjim Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
