I did some looking, I have never stumbled across any but I figure I was looking in the right place. Side of slope/moss/half sun etc., didn't see any.
Think I see 11, 2 I'm questionable on, and thouth there was an arrowhead(red dot) but probably not. What were they around? Cottonwood/poplar? Forgot pic
It will be May before they start coming on here in Idaho. Mother's day weekend is usually the prime. We have a solid 3-4 weeks that we find them. Early in the season we do better in open areas that get lots of sun, and down in lower elevations. Towards the end of the season we can still find fresh ones under heavy cover at higher altitude. We make zero social plans during May so that we can spend all our free time looking for them. There is nothing better than morels. The only other mushroom that comes close IMO is shaggy manes. I also don't pull them up, I pinch or cut the stem. Mesh bags do catch on everything, but I still use one. I switched to a mesh about 6-7 years ago and believe they work. I've been finding a better average of them the last couple of years in my normal search spots. I find areas that were logged around 2-3 years prior or more to be real hot spots, they really spread those spores around and these spots produce for years and years. Of course burned areas are good too. I prefer them just seasoned (salt or season salt, a bit of garlic pepper, and a slight dash of Worchester) and sautéed in butter, but will also egg & bread crumb them here and there. I prefer unflavored bread crumbs, as I want as much of the morel flavor as possible. Sautéed in butter and then while there is still some juice left before it cooks off, I like to throw in some whipped eggs and simply make scrambled eggs too. The eggs soak up the morel flavor and it is quite tasty. I usually do this when I haven't found very many to make a good batch of them sautéed. I have tried a few ways to preserve them, but no method produces near as strong of a flavor as fresh. Now my mouth is watering...I look forward to them every year.
Think I'm gonna hit my early spot after work tonight. Have to be up looking at the soil temps this past week. Might not be many or big, but to know they've started is good enough for me. Working a half day the 25th and then off through the 5th of May.
No mushrooms yet, still think this weekend for certain. Was a bit surprised by how tall some of the mayapples were already. Normally still wrapped up
Cedar and elm saplings. I find the majority of mine out here in Oklahoma under cedars. I have one more spot to go check out but we have a big cool front moving in and then another warm up with rain so we might get another flush. Everybody has been finding them here lately. I'm frying up a mess tonight.
Looked arpund little today and didn't find anything. Even the may apples are all shriveled up. Should get goin after this little cold snap tomorrow tho. Thinking maybe next weekend, especially if get the rain Wed or Thurs. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
Mayapples that were 6-7" Wednesday are now over a foot tall in my early spot. Freaking wierd as trillium is budding at that point normally. We have plenty of moisture coming, we're due for a good year.

I'm a firm believer that a good hard freeze during Winter followed by a normal Spring is the best ingredients for a perfect season. The worse the winter the better the season if Spring cooperates. Thinking about changing my vacation again. Was May 2-12th then April 25th- May 4th. Either switching bavk to the 2-12th or taking two 5 day weekends in May. Had an inch of snow today, not hurting things, but not exactly helping either. I don't mind snow early in the morel season. It melts slowly and absorbs into the ground, rather than rain that when heavy runs off and doesn't help the hillsides.
Switched vacation back to May 2nd-12th. If shrooms ain't good the crappie and bass should be biting, but think the yellows will be up at that point. Woke up to 29 degrees this morning. Mother Nature can be a cruel wench sometimes.
Walked all over the mountain Saturday and found none. Came back home to check my bees and found 7 right by the hives. Never found any in or around my house before so I'll need to keep an eye out. Found 2 more today at lunch.
Next weekend is gonna be the start and the following I go on vacation. 12 more tonight, bakers dozen and it has just begun.
I put on some serious miles last weekend, scouting and searching. I'm convinced morels don't grow where I hunt, and the bucks do not shed their antlers either
This is cool as hell. First pic was posted elsewhere whether anyone has found them growing out of walnut shells. I asked if any other pics were taken for such a unique image/occurence. Indeed there were. Posting with his/her permission, not mine but wish they were. Cracked wal ut right place, right time and morel grew at right time amd pace.
