Good luck on the bass fishing. I got out for the first time last week. Ice had been off about 48 hours and I caught 7 in an hour. Biggest was a 6.24lb. which is pretty decent for around here. You should hit double digits there I would assume.

What part of IA you in? I went out the other day fishing ponds and caught a few dinks nothing big yet. Might take the boat out somewhere this weekend

Wait what? A 6+ pounder is "pretty decent" in your part of the country? Man the standards for bucks and fish go way up as you move west! My largest is a smallmouth out of Erie that went over 6 and it was an absolute tank to me.

South-central part. About an hour south of Des Moines. I tried using a jig-n-pig really slow with no results. Moved to shallower water and started throwing a rattletrap and started getting good action immediately. I caught a couple on a big spinner in black with bright orange Colorado blades also. I actually had the best results with a pretty quick retrieve on it too. I think the faster moving baits were triggering reaction strikes. I will probably start getting the boat ready this weekend.

Lol, no it's actually a really nice bass for me. My PB is 7.3, so anything over 5 is really pretty good for me here. I just looked at the pictures and see that like all good fishermen, I stretched the truth a bit. She was actually 6.23, lol. I got away from fishing for nearly 17 years and my son's have reignited what used to be a passion of mine. I love that there is little to no drama when it comes to fishing. It's a lot more relaxing than worrying about giant whitetails. I hope dmen posts up some pictures of some sows!

The gentlemen taking me out Friday is a hardcore tournament fishermen. He actually just finished 3rd in an ABA tournament a couple weeks ago on okochobee. I don’t know about double digit bass, but I am hoping for some 5+ pounders. 6.24 is a pig anywhere. I will definitely post any pictures from Friday.

Good luck! I will not be surprised if you have something much larger.

No shiners, we are going to be using swim jigs, chatterbaits, swim baits.

Nice! Debating between running over to Nebraska and turkey hunting or taking the boat down around osceola

Sounds like you have a good local contact. That's worth a ton when hitting new water.

Don't discount a wacky rigged worm if they are being picky. That seems to trigger strikes when nothing else will sometimes. But again, I would guess that your local tournament fisherman will be on top of what suits that lake best. Some day I really want to go bass fishing in the South. My oldest son and I are going to try to do some small tournaments this summer. I have never done that and think it would be a good way to spend time with him. Good luck!
