I have not had the joy of turkey hunting I really want to get into it but I honestly am not even sure where to start lol.
I used to hunt turkeys religiously until I had kids. now sleep seems to be more enjoying. I am starting to get the itch to go again but building my house is going to eat up most of my time this year. only a temporary delay.
Best way to begin requires no call, no camo, no weapon. In late April go to your woods about 30mins before sunrise and sit down. If you sit in that woods for over a hr and dont hear a Gobble there is no point in starting...for you dont have birds my freind. When and if you hear a gobble( dont worry you will know it when it happens) the best way to begin is a shotgun(iron sights) with a Turkey load. And your deer camo will work just fine. Go to Walmart and buy a slate and striker and go home to give it the old school of YouTube. Once you learn a putt putt Yelp conversation you repeat the first morning but once you hear one you sit still and call him to you them blammo Good luck Send pics
This is extremely accurate. I hear "gobbles" alot through the beginning of April, until I really hear one. And thats about enough to get a man aroused.
How about the first time you blindly sit under a tree and it ends up being the roosting tree....when they fire off I almost shat
The first turkey hunt I went on was just pure dumb luck. I had to go take a test and I got out at 11. (We can only hunt til 1:00 in Illinois) so I just picked a tree and sat down with a Jake decoy out. I did a little blind calling and then my uncle called me and mid conversation a Jake showed up and I smoked him. After that, I was hooked for life. I get almost as excited for spring gobblers as I do hunting the rut every year. Those gobbles as the sun rises on a cool spring morning sure gets me aroused that’s for damn sure! Sounds like I can get the hang of it quickly! I know I have birds in the spring because I have seen them! one huge gobbler! I'll have to give it a shot! Also, side question anybody get their prize pack yet? My birthday is coming up and I have a feeling it came in the mail but my parents are hiding it from me until then!
I have not gotten my prize pack yet. I can ask Brad if he got them in the mail! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
My wife picked Texas Roadhouse for her birthday dinner. I spent the whole meal eyeballing a perfectly symmetrical 145" 10 pointer on the wall. I miss deer season already!
Snow will be gone and I will be shed hunting for the first time looking for " Jack" Since we found his bone last year(2018 shed season) and he was 133ish I can extrapolate his score this year to come if I get last year's measurement. I have him at high 140 by pic. Would love to be wrong and under
I may try to get into the woods after work today and walk around for a little bit and see what I can find. I’ve got high hopes of finding a shed or two. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Not a big shed hunter but passed 8 or so deer last night on the way home and three nice bucks in full head gear still
I found an oldie but a goodie yesterday with the dog and girlfriend. That makes eleven for the year for me. I know when this team first got put together I was throwing a pitty party because my ex's father had 400 acres of some fantastic deer hunting land and really enjoyed letting me hunt it. Well... I lucked out again because this new one can get me access to about 1,300 acres of primooooo land. An area I've grown up watching huge velvet bucks and rutting bucks in the fall chasing. Call me a gold digger, but I just say I have good taste in women.
Just to tease... this was a buck a couple years ago who spent a ton of time hanging by the road. Her dad ended up killing him in December.
The dream team is taking our talents to Fix's majestic land tomorrow for a little shed hunting date. If we are no longer heard from again, it was Fix. So make sure he gets traded for the contest next season.
