Headed to Crested Butte, CO

My Dad has a cousin who owns land in the Crested Butte, Colorado area and I plan on doing some hunting out there in the next few years. My dad was there the past few weeks and was seeing groups of elk along the roads and had whitetail right in camp. My first time going there will be in 2019 to hopefully scout for elk, whitetail, and possibly moose because they are in the area.

Was wondering if anyone had any information on the area and how the elk and whitetail are seasonally in terms of elevation? Also any info on tags and seasons would help, dont worry, I know I have plenty of research to do on my own before I go. lol

GMU 54 Gunnison County, I think it will be a OTC hunt. Looks like the average number of license handed out to nonresident is in mid 600s

 

Cool. I'm hunting the unit just below you this year. I will be about a hour south of you. If you put a hunt together, definitely try to do the archery season. Less pressure and you get to be there during the rut. I will be hunting in 9500 - 10000 ft range in meadows and aspen trees. There are areas of dark timber, great place to check for sign and elk bedded for the day. The biggest thing is to keep moving looking the elk, once you find them move in for the stalk. It's alot like hunting a 600-700 lbs turkey. Some of style you hunt turkey, work for elk.

I am hunting 54 this September. 1st time chasing elk so we will see how it goes

Be on the lookout for chanterelle and boulette mushrooms! I am heading up to the Rio Grande National Forest this weekend just to meet up with a buddy to go foraging.

 

Any recommendations on a bag, or is it like a bow and i have to try a bunch on?? I think I may have access to a 4x4 of some sort for hauling game/gear in and out but I'm not going to chance anything. Only brands I really know are Badlands and Tenzing.

 

How did your hunt end up?

 

I am getting ready for my first trip to CO. I got an EXO pack and so far. It has been great. Doing 1.5 miles a night at a 10% incline with the loaded pack and the new boots breaking me and them in I will be day tripping out of the camper in unit 71
