Are there any current threads already started for guys that hunt predators? Getting that time of the year here in the NE and I was curious if anyone else gets into it also?
There’s a few on here. I used to a heck of a lot more than I do now. Work is so backlogged by the time other hunting seasons are over. Come February I’m having to put in 6-7 day work weeks. How do you hunt them? Calls? Rifle or shotgun? Day or night?
Have both a foxpro electric caller and a couple different mouth calls. I haven't called in yotes with the mouth calls but i have a few fox. We usually go out in two man "teams" late at night (1am-4am), or we go out first thing in the morning sitting at first light till 9 or so. One carries a shotgun and the other some sort of rifle with a scope. Have yet to kill a yote while actually hunting them (got 2 during rifle season). I missed one last year at night after it hung up and turned and ran... Hoping to make it happen for the first time this year!
Nice! Are you east or west of the mississippi? I have read that it's like hunting two completely different animals. I'm constantly reading and trying to figure out ways to outsmart these NE dogs, but they're freakin' smart!
Western MN but go to ND,sd,wy and Montana also. Easterns can be called but I think the amount of traffic and people in general keep em a bit more nervous than the ones out west. Plus there are just more coyotes in the west which means every time you call, more ears are listening. Try getting into a remote waterway on ice. Coyotes LOVE coming in on ice.
Western pa? Im in NEPA Columbia and Luzerne counties Sent from my SM-G950U1 using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
In my area in NY we have a high population of coyotes (for the East) but they are extremely weary. It seems like everyone and their brother has an e-call and a walmart special red-lense spotlight, that they utilize to the max. Call shy and light shy dogs are the norm for around here, that's why I kill fox at night and coyotes early morning or right at dusk with okay success. When I hunted Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota coyotes, I could not believe the numbers, the amount they vocalize, and the opportunity to really hunt them all day. They can be extremely smart animals, so when you can fool them it is a great feeling.
FINALLY had some magic last night, how amazing it was! Nice male, 35lbs. After hanging up with another at about 300 yds, finally got him to commit on a pup distress call, dropped him at about 100yds l. Remington. 308 Sent from my SM-G950U1 using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
Excellent! Many more to come hopefully. Now's the Time of year to start/ stay with coyote talk. Breeding season is here. Distress will still work but lots of older ones have heard the bunny blues but still have love on their mind. Gotta be a bit more patient tho. How long from starting did he come in?
Thanks! The field we were in starts low off the road and then rises about 100yds out. We hit that Rise and scanned the field and they were already out about 400yds. So with perfect wind we snuck up to our spot which is just a single fence post in the middle of the field and began right away with female howls, bark howls. Got a couple responding howls but wouldn't commit. Tried male screams and female paired up, still nothing. after about 15 minutes of trying those, we hit the pup distress and they came in on a string. The second one stayed behind the first about 40 yards and at the sound of the shot was turned and hightailing it with no shot opportunity
I've only been hunting for coyotes a couple times and never around here (MN). I've only hunted them in Colorado. Based on the amount of them I have on camera this year I should really get out there. I just dont have the experience/know how. #keephammering #nockon
Been hunting eastern dogs in MA for 15 yrs with fox-pro callers. Makes deer hunting look like a joke. Its the hardest hunt you'll ever love.
Wasn't sure where to post this. Sunday afternoon after church, my brother in law, a friend, and I decided to go squirrel hunting. Right as we were about to call it quits and I was making my way thru the woods to get back to them, this coyote came running and splashing right up the creek and stopped 10-15 yards from me. Definitely a memorable hunt.
Its awesome when you're not expecting it! Sent from my SM-G950U1 using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
