hey guys yars ago I done all kinds of moose hunting with a bow doing 300 fps ibo. took all kinds of moose with it. set to 57 pounds with 480 grain arrows 29 inch draw. xx78 super slam fast forward 22 years later my new bow is doing 330 ibo.. but with 500 grain fmj arrows 5mm 29 draw but with 50 pound draw weight.... verses the above bow 57 draw weight. what set up do you think is more effective and why in your opinion and why
All about momentum and KE. A quick run of the numbers shows the 500 grain outperforming in those areas. That's using IBO, which is likely not the speed at which you're shooting. Unless that's chrono'ed speed, in which case I digress.
the bow I was using back 22 years ago was 300 ibo. the bow im using now is 330 ibo…..amo the former bow was 223 amo and the current one the amo is 240
What I'm saying is the posted IBO speed is likely not what you're actually shooting. IBO is based on 30" draw, 70# draw, and 350 grain arrow.

Your older set up was shooting that arrow at approximately 215 fps and delivering 49.6 ft. pounds of kinetic energy. You new set up is traveling at approximately 225fps and delivering 56.5 pounds of kinetic energy. Since the second arrow is heavier and the speeds are so close, I expect the new arrow to have a slightly higher momentum as well. The new set up, on paper, is far superior.
what speeds are people getting out of a bow (AMO) out of a bow that's doing 330 ibo? my old set up my amo was 224 fps and my new set up is doing 330 ibo.???
Not sure what "AMO" is. But my current bow is IBO 335. Arrow 409 grains. Draw 28" and 66 pounds. Arrow is 280 fps.
Haha. That what we used to calculate the now's performance before we were introduced to IBO. AMO is a 540gn arrow at 60lbs at 30". Which is more conservative of a picture in comparison to IBO with it's 359gn arrow at 79lbs (also 30").
That is a really light arrow for an animal the size of a moose. I hunt elk and moose with a 500 grain arrow. A heavier arrow leads to better penetration. My arrow speed is around 269 fps. Sacrifice a little speed and shoot a heavier arrow. You will be glad you did if you hit a shoulder or rib. The bones are way more dense than a deer.
I am not hunting moose with that arrow. Was just replying with data requested asking what kind of speeds other were seeing compared to IBO or AMO ratings.
Like others said just increase arrow weight and dont put vibration dampers on the string (in the case of a long bow). These days compound bows are shooting so fast that with a bit of extra weight they will zip through anything (provided a good sharp broadhead).
the set up im shooting is a 52 pound halon x. 30 inch draw .31 inch arrow 125 grain blades. fmj arrows. arrow weight. tad over 500 grains 245 feet per second
50 lbs is 20 years ago 60#. I would not hesitate shooting a big bull now with 50# with a solid broadheads.
my old set up 22 years ago was a browning 6t6l. 57 pounds. 29 draw length 30 inch arrow 125 tips and xx78 super slam. I tokk all kinds of moose back then no problem at all. do any of you guys feel the new 5 mm fmj will penetrate deeper than the old xx78 I used to use.
