An unacceptable 164" buck is a clear example of how, for some, counting inches is killing deer hunting. Here's a look at the... Read more... The post Is Counting Inches Killing Deer Hunting? appeared first on Bowhunting.com. Continue reading...
Actually, Video Cameras & Social Media are KILLING deer hunting. Just watch a few hunting videos & you will see that about 1/3 of the animals harvested are unethical because of poor shot placement. Most Hunters today are more concerned about the video footage than they are about making an ethical shot. Then take a look at look at the trash talk among fellow hunters regarding something as simple as weapon choice. The sport is being destroyed from within. And, if it weren't for Hunting Shows & Websites noone would have the ability to shame an animal based on its score. The P&Y and B&C have been around for 50+ years w/o issues until recent years due to Videos & Social Media.
You can find stupid ppl to prove any point. I know people love to cry elitist but you should count inches. It's easier to kill little bucks than old does. But do what makes you happy. Also though, don't try to make me feel bad about not congratulating you on your little buck. The "game" isn't on until at the very least 3.5 years old. IMHO So continue to make excuses on why you kill first rack bucks... blame us "elitist A..holes " but don't cry that you never see big bucks if you kill them at 2.5
I agree to the point that every one wants to get the largest deer possible on film now, the hunting industry definitely has promoted this for a long time now. I can't watch hunting shows because I get tired of all the poor shot placements...I wish I had a dollar for every time I heard, "I hit it a little far back, I'm going to back out and look tomorrow."
imagine how disappointed she likely is with her husband... As far as the original intent of the article; the more people who are disappointed with 160"+ deer the better off the average Joe Deerhunter will be . That would mean a lot more 120-160" running around to hunt; which has not really happened so I don't see that inch-counting is really having any effect on deer hunting at all.
Tell you what if a 14 year old kid is disappointed with a 160+ buck the entire family needs to be on Dr Phil.
We are very strict on all leases and when a young kid ( happens once a year) shoots anything from a spike up ...scratch that button up we make a big deal out of it and tell them how happy and proud we are. But if I let you a grown as$ man and long time hunter on my $hit you better follow my rules and being able to count inches on the fly is rule #1
If ya spend thousands of dollars to shoot a big buck yes inches matter ! kinda of a shame we have gotten to this point, inches for dollars ! or only the rich elitists can afford to shoot big bucks ! A previous business owner I worked for many years ago always shot a huge buck with rifle every year, all heads were mounted and on his office wall, YES BIG MAN HUNTER--until it came out who and where he bought them from, buck on a rope !!!
Only thing I really count is how much my hard work pays off. If other people are crazy and only care about inches then that is on them. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
Also; in the areas I hunt for every big rack hunter there are probably 20 or more who would rather shoot a 1.5-2.5yo buck of any size than a doe. Just based on scale alone, that's a much larger problem than BC-only hunters.
P&Y We work all year grooming the property and habitat in hopes of taking a mature whitetail....for no one but ourselves. Counting inches is the quickest way to determine maturity. This is my only social media and I have have eaten tags more years then not but it's my choice. This crybaby mentality of "dont shame me" is getting out of hand. Not directed at you noodle just didn't want to have 2 posts
I was with you right up until you said this. You do know that the size of a buck's rack isn't indicative of age right? I'd go along with calling it a crucial consideration or factor.
In NY I have never seen a 130 1.5 or 2.5. But hey find the property and let me hunt it and I'm in. Ill even follow whatever rules you give me
That's right. I think most people would be surprised at the number of bucks that will never top out past the 130's, regardless of age. I know for absolutely certainty, that this 6 point is at least a 4yo this year, with a really good chance that he's older. I actually didn't realize there were so many of these (small mature bucks) until recent years.
